hello there,i need your help plz.My cat messie 2 year old is losing hair like crazy, even everytime wen i touch him lots of hair just sticks to my hands.i heard that improper grooming cud be a reason of hairfall, but wen i groom him a feel that i mite make hm completely bald.even wen he plays his hair just sticks to everything n flys all around the house. My mum keeps scaring me that we mite have to give the cat away due to health threats to us like asthama etc.But i dun want to,i love hom too much n i want a cure fer him desperately!!!!!.there arent any bald patches on his body at all just a lot of shedding n static hair.He had enormous neck hair before like a lions mane, now he just looks like normal street cat.I gt hm dewormed last week,as the vet said that it cud be due to paraites in his stomach n stuff, but its been a week since n no slight improvement at all :(((( .Please elp n reply soon ....i cannot leave messie alone!!!!!

I'm not sure where you live, but in the Northern Hemisphere, it's shedding season!  Come to think of it, there are two shedding seasons, so it may actually be shedding season in the Southern Hemisphere too

Since brushing him is not making him bald, then the best thing to do to keep that lose hair under control is to keep brushing him.  And it might help to give him a good quality Omega 3 oil, like Salmon Oil or Krill Oil, mixed into his food.  One 500mg capsule per day should be sufficient.

Did he not do this last year too?  During shedding season, cats really do shed quite a bit.  They actually shed all the time, just more certain times of the year.  I brushed one of mine yesterday, the one with the shortest hair, and got a lo tof hair off him!  Then I brushed him again later in the day and got a bunch more.  It's just the way it is during this season.  (and I already give mine Krill Oil!)

Are you noticing any abnormal behavior...scratching, biting at himself, obsessive licking?  If so, then you might need to take him in to be seen b a Vet.  Is he developing mats in his fur?  That is always a concern, especially during shedding season.  Does he have long hair?  I know you are brushing him, but it's important to keep it up, especially now.  Is he throwing up hairballs?  (that wouldn't be abnormal right now)

What are you feeding him?  Diet can impact shedding.

he did shed last year, but not ths much!.He scratches, but not excessively or frequently maybe just once or twice a day.yea but he does lick himself a lot,esp after i touch him, groom him and after a bath.....He does tend to develope mats in his hair,he had a couple of them a few months ago n i had to cut his hair from those areas....Since then m very carefull with him,i brush him twice a day n keep checking fer knots to become so i can straighten them b4 they get worse. He doesnt have mats fer now......He had really long hair considering him to be a mainecoon,b4 but now his hair has thinned ALOT!. :(.... i feed him Royal canin dry fer skin and coat.I also give him milk in the eve and have now started to put a few drops of vitamin supplement in it as well.I really want him to stop this excessive shedding and get back to his original condition.....oh and one more thing his tail is thinning more than his body and is really greasy n static,i dunno wats that about either :s

I think what you are feeding him is ok, especially since you are feeding something specifically for skin and coat.  (IMHO canned food would be better, but many, many people feed kibble, and since he doesn't appear to be itchy, it doesn't appear he is allergic to anything in the food.)  Are the liquid vitamins you are adding specifically for cats?  If so, then that should be ok too, as long as you are following the directions.  Do they include any Omega 3s.  If not, that is the only thing I can suggest...add some.  As I believe I stated above, maybe some really good Salmon Oil or Krill Oil.

As to his greasy tail...stud tail starts at the base of the tail, as far as anything I've ever read, so sure doesn't sound like that's what's causing it.  Maybe you should take him to the Vet, just to make sure nothing is really wrong with him.

Either works, but if you use the capsules, then you have to puncture them and squeeze the oil out over his food.  That's how you give it to him...in his food.  I give 1 500mb capsule per day, squeezed over the food (I use Krill Oil).  Make sure whatever you use is plain salmon oil...if you buy stuff that is for people, make sure it doesn't contain any lemon...cats don't like citrus.

thanks alot.i had been wondering though, cud the hairfall be caused by intense dry weather.I mean i actually live in a desert land as u know, the weather here is extremely dry n gets dusty during summers, sandstorms r often happening.I usually leave my cat outside in the veranda which is just a plain pavement fer him to pee n poop in his litter box(mum doesnt allow the litter box to be kept inside the house).during the sandy days the outside area gets very dusty, you can actually notice piles of dust here n there.....and the worst part is that my cat loves to roll over in that dust. :(.... i try to stop him but he must be doing it when m not looking lol....its really hard to control the dust problem,so we take him a bath every week. But his hair is still very dry n static n starts falling again wenever he rolls in the dust.Wonder why?

I would think that bathing him every week could also be very drying.  After I bathe, I always have to put lotion on because it makes me so dry...it probably is the same for your Messie!  What are you using to bathe him?

As far as the static,, your hair probably does the same thing when it's super dry outside, doesn't it?  Mine does
.  The other day we had a dewpoint in the negative figure.  I'm not sure how that's even possible
.  Anyway, many time I will touch my furkids and they will spark from the static electricity.  Poor kids....I hope it doesn't hurt them

Don't know why Messie's hair would fall out when he rolls in the dust.  Are you giving him the Salmon Oil yet?

Even if the shampoo says it's ok to use frequently, it can still be drying, IMHO.

the omega 3 supplement sounds ok.  Honestly, I don't know why he is shedding so badly, other than shedding season.  However, it's possible it could have something to do with his thyroid being out of whack

But, as i think we discussed above, diet is the main thing, and you said canned food doesnt work for him as it causes soft stools
