So, as many know, my Mom has been battling her little butt off for the past year and a half fighting stage 4 lung cancer. It seems every time the doctors give us bad news it just motivates her to fight harder! She just finished full brain radiation for the second time and is showing no signs of slowing down. Go girl!

On Monday she left for a two week trip of a lifetime: all the way to a small town in Brazil to see a religious healer named John of God. We are not super religious people, but are spiritual. She went with an open mind and an open heart- not with grandiose ideas of being "cured," but just to have the experience. No harm, right?

I am so happy that she has had this opportunity and was strong enough to go, though I will say that as one of her primary caretakers I'm basically having a stroke 24/7 because I don't have any way to know if she's okay. I can't remind her to take her meds, check her oxygen levels, or give her an excuse to go lay down if she looks tired. It's all out of my control! And, it's not like I can just call her on the phone and check in. I have to wait for her to e-mail, and, given how technologically un-savvy my mother is she probably won't ever figure it out!

So my request is, if you have a moment, please pray/send vibes/think positive thoughts that she is feeling well while there and is being spiritually enlightened. If any of you have heard of John of God (or been to see him) I would LOVE to hear your stories!

I suppose this post serves no other purpose than me trying to get my mind off of it. Perhaps this is my lesson in not being such a control freak!

Thanks so much all. Amazingly I heard from her today! The Spiritual stuff MUST be working- only God could teach that woman how to access her email in another Country!

Since I already shared she was going I'm going to share what she said. I modified it slightly by taking out names but I didn't modify her text. I think she still writes well given she just finished second round brain radiation! J is my brother who has been living in Peru for the past few months and took a bus (yes, a bus- I can't wait to hear some of those stories) to meet up with her. L is her best friend who also went.

Here is what she said:

"Yes. i am up late..I am too excited to sleep. A lot has happened. I did meet up with J at the airport. He has his room and L and I are sharing a room. We have all our meals together so we can catch up on the day. The people are amazing. Everybody is always offering a hand. The casa is where we see John of God on Wed, Thurs Fri. Yesterday I went before him and he said operation. So a group of us went to the surgery room. You sit in meditation and the entities, spirits and John of God perform spiritual surgery. You have to go straight to bed for 24 hours. I slept from the moment I got back and just really started waking up at dinnertime. I felt like i had been operated on. I have some herbs to take. Tomorrow we will sit in the current rooms to keep the light coming and supporting everyone with prayer. There is amazing energy and love here. J and I have had time together, which is nice. We have a lot of catching up to do. I think we have free time Sat,Sun,Mon,Tues to do what I do best...go shopping. Lots of cute shops! That will be fun. They are taking care of me. Sometimes I use the wheelchair, sometimes a cab

This is just the beginning! I feel no cancer in my body. But I know to be patient. My feet didn't hit the ground until tonight.

This is an amazing place! Can't even explain it. Just believe!!! See me as cancer free. When you believe it you will see it! LOVE Mom"

Wow!  this is exciting stuff (I, personally, think)!  I have had a life threatening illness for almost 30 years, and I really do believe that attitude is everything.  My doctor told me 20 years ago that if there was anything I really wanted to do, I should do it (meaning I didn't have long to live), and I'm still here, mainly because I just don't dwell on the negative.

How wonderful that your mother did this!  At first I wondered if she was brave enough to go by herself all that way, but now I know she had a friend go with her, which was good.

Can't wait to hear more

Wow. That's amazing you have been fighting for so long!

I totally agree that attitude is everything. If you decide your time is limited then it will be. But, if you keep living who knows how far you can take it. A big inspiration to me has been a friends Mom. She was diagnosed with colon cancer when he was in middle school. They told her to enjoy the time she had because she would never see him graduate. Well, not only did she see him finish high school but college and a masters degree as well. Then, a few years after that she proudly watched him get married and even later, held her first grandchild. We all have an exit point, but no doctor can tell you when that is!

I don't know that I believe my Mom can come home cancer free. I do believe however that cancer can slow in it's growth and that you can continue to live with it. That's my hope: slowed/stopped growth.

I'm going to add you to my list of people who have kicked butt way longer than anyone thought they would MGJ! Keep up the good fight!

(And no she didn't go by herself. If her friend hadn't gone I would have because there is no way she can travel alone, but I felt in my gut that this was her journey to take without me. I know if I was there I would be too overprotective and that isn't what she needs on this trip. She needs the more low key style of her friend. Now that I know she is there and safe I feel much more relaxed about it all, and I'm enjoying my two weeks off of not having care taking duties).
