We made out very good in the Easter candy department this year!  My Mother has this running tradition with a neighbor; for probably close to 10 years now where they take turns hiding eggs in each others yards.  She met the lady at the grocery store where the lady works and it's become a running gag.  Mom started it by hiding a few plastic eggs with candy in her yard one year.  It took her a bit to figure out it was Mom who'd done it.  The next year Mom found eggs in her yard.  Well this year was Mom's turn to receive eggs and boy did DD and my nephew make out like bandits!!

Mom said when she got up yesterday one of her cat's (who is scared of almost everything) was all tensed up looking out the door.  There were 2 chocolate bunnies looking back at him.
And there were eggs all over the yard.  Mom said they went out and added some more too so whew!  This neighbor stuffed some of these eggs goo.  I'm talking FULL of jelly beans!  I've found one with a nickle in it too.
It's the first time I've gotten candy for my DD's basket...I should have skipped!  There is way too much here!  I'm sitting here taking most out and putting just a couple back in each egg.  DD doesn't get a ton of candy; but since it's all over she is asking CONSTANTLY and Mommy has been loosing patience.  Daddy will take care of some of this evidence later I'm sure.

Am I the only mean mommy out there taking their kid's candy?

Do you remember the comic strip Sally Forth? At Easter, she would always eat the ears off her daughter's chocolate bunny. She couldn't help herself; every year she would swear she wasn't going to eat those ears and every year she did. Her daughter would get quite frustrated with her. I don't blame her, though; those ears are best part of the bunny!

We used to do that before we had kids!  No need now!

No but my Mom and I always used to eat the ears off mine and stick the rest in the freezer!  I was thinking about this the other day.  I'm pretty sure Mom "took care of" the rest of that frozen bunny!

I like to eat the eyes first!
You are very kind; I guess it is a bit crude to make him watch his ears go...

When mine were little- they used to make out big time in the candy dept.  We had this next door neighbor (who died about 5 years ago) who would do stuff for my kids.  She had grandkids the same age as mine- so in her words "what were 2 more kids"?.  Then we'd give them candy.  And they'd get it at church.  And they'd get it at parties at school.  I had this perpetual candy dish that was above the fridge that had candy in it from Easter onward (and yeah- it'd get nasty after a while LOL.  Full of the stuff nobody wanted- yet I didn't want to throw it)

This is kind of a sad story.  There was an older couple who would open their house at Easter and the Sunday before Thanksgiving.  Anyone could come- only thing is you'd have to take a covered dish or dessert.  There were always tons of people- and tons of food.  At Easter- the lady of the house would stuff eggs with candy (and there were a TON of eggs).  The kids would find them, and then afterwards she'd have this table with stuff from Dollar Tree to pick from- after you'd cleaned out the eggs and returned them.  So much fun- my kids did the egg hunt and they were well past the age of egg hunts.

She passed away suddenly last January
Easter just hasn't been the same. Her husband just doesn't have the heart to do it anymore.

We did have friends over- and had fun.  And it was wierd too b/c the oldest was away at college- no time off for Easter.  I didn't send her any candy- I sent her money in a silly card.  She was happy.

Sorry kind of off topic.

Cheryl, your story shows the spirit of Easter. Renewal and the circle of life. Thank you for sharing it.

Aw that is so sad and but heartwarming too.  What a sweet tradition.  It sounds like they really loved doing that together.
