Hello all. I am new here, but I stumbled onto this site while looking for comfort. A week ago this morning, at 2:45 am, my family and I had to make the horrible choice to put our beloved friend and buddy, Oreo, to sleep. He woke us up around midnight screaming, and by the time I got downstairs from the third floor where I was sleeping soundly, my husband and son had already gotten him in the car and were off to the 24 hour emergency vet, 30 minutes away. Oreo could not use his back legs at all, and was clearly in horrible pain.

My husband called me about an hour later, telling me that we would have to put Oreo to sleep. I demanded to talk to the doctor, and have him explain and convince me of this. He did so in short order. Oreo had a saddle thrombosis. I'm sure many of you out there know what that is, but to me it was brand new. The clot that had traveled from his heart hade lodged in his leg arteries, and paralyzed them. The doctor let me know that the cats who survive this with any quality of life are quite rare, among the many he has seen. Basically, I had a cat with heart disease, who could have a reoccurrence at any time.

Oreo was the light in all of our lives. He was only seven. I am just beginning to deal with the guilt and sorrow that I know are normal. We are going to get some photos of him printed this week, and make a collage for display in our home. Also (and oddly enough, this has been my one smiling moment since his death), I ordered a set of vanitylicense plates (very common

here in Maine, but something I’ve always scorned), that says “My Bud-E”, since that is what I always called him. It was the last thing I said to him: “You’ll always be my buddy.” Thanks to all of you for listening.

I am so sorry you lost your kitty. {{{ HUGS }}}. He will always be your buddy and live on in your heart.

I'm sorry it was a sad reason that you joined the site, but I hope you feel welcome here. We understand how you feel and will try to help you through this hard time.

Take care.

Welcome to TCS - I just wish it was under happier circumstances. I've moved this thread to our forum for tributes to our lost pets.

I'm very sorry for your loss. It must have been a real shock to lose Oreo so suddenly and at such a young age. Heart disease unfortunately takes far too many of our beloved babies. RIP, Oreo.

So sorry to hear about your Buddy. It is so difficult when our pets come to the end of their days, especially when it is totally unexpected and they are still young. You did the right thing for your friend by setting him free. He'll remain in your heart forever. Talk about your feelings with friends and family members if they are understanding. It may take a long time to work through those feelings but you will come out on the other side and back into the light.

Like you I am a newbie and found the site while looking for comfort too. My Cat Felix was very ill and wasn't eating. I thought he was near the end of his days. Fortunately my vet was able to intervene but we are not certain how successful treatment will be. Felix is 20 in human years. We are taking it one day at a time. He has taken in more nourishment in the last 2 days than he did the entire week prior so there has been some improvement. We are cautiously optimistic.

Keep in touch if you need an understanding cat lover to converse with about your Buddy. I have raised 12 cats over the years and we are down to only two now. Just last year we lost our big boy, Angel. He was an amazing cat and we miss him along with our other cats that left this world before him. I light candles for them to this day during the holidays. Life would not have been the same without having them in our family.

Sincerely, PJCats

We lost our beloved Truman (Dottie's nightly cuddle buddy) to a saddle thrombosis at about age seven, so I understand completely the anquish it causes for an owner, and the pain it causes for the cat.  RIP, Oreo.

I too joined this site when my Chrissy was killed in front of me. I wish I could help you, but all I can do is to offer what comfort I can, and to let you know we will be here for you. I'm so sorry you have to go through this, time is the only thing that helps. We love so much, so it hurts that much more when we lose them. Oreo was much loved and will be waiting at the Rainbow Bridge. RIP beautiful Oreo!
