Hi there,

My cat, Minette, while I was gone and my roommates were taking care of her, ran away from the house.  She has done that before but usually comes back within a couple of days. I still worry sick though as we live on a busy corner.  Anyhow, she came back a couple days later, probably one night, by what my roommates told me.  When she came back, they said she wasn't really herself.  She was reluctant to come in even though she was shaking the bowl that had food around which normally drives her nuts.  She's usually really active, loving and prrrs a lot.  Lately she's been throwing up, not eating (except for a few kibbles the other night), very lethargic, the cat litter might have had 1 pee in it since she got back (no feces) and I have been putting water via a syringe down to attempt to keep her hydrated. I have a feeling that she may have eaten something?? Would something be stuck in her?  My roommate said that she apparently threw up something that resembled gum?? Argh... I’m pretty worried.

Any ideas?

I'll be seeing the vet shortly but should I bring her to the emergency instead??

A worried sick owner :(

How long has she been lethargic, not eating and throwing up? If it's been longer than 24 hours, she needs to see a vet sooner rather than later. She very well could have ingested something toxic while she was out. All of her behaviors point to something being wrong as you fear. Did your roommate save what she threw up that looks like gum? That may help pinpoint the problem if you can recover it.

I dont blame you for being worried, especially since she was outside and you don't know what she could have gotten into.

Honestly if I were in your shoes I would err on the side of caution and take her to the ER vet as her symptoms are consistent with consuming something toxic. Aside from possible poisoning, cats can go into liver failure quickly if they become dehydrated. I think you have too many life threatening symptoms occurring not to take her in ASAP. There was a thread about a week ago of a cat with similar symptoms. Turns out she had ingested a piece of string that got tangled in her intestines, requiring emergency surgery. Unfortunately she did not make it. I know her Momma would not want that to happen to your girl so grab a book, find the carrier, and take her now.

I'm sending all my vibes that this is all an overreaction and that it's nothing life threatening. Please, let us know what the vet says!
