My eight-month-old kitten has been having stomach upset problems with his Purina ONE dry food/IAMS wet food combination. So yesterday, we started him on California Natural wet and dry food... And found out that the bag we've been feeding him has been recalled for salmonella!!!

Since we were mixing it 50/50 with the old stuff, he's only eaten about 1/2 cup of dry food and 1/2 can wet food. He's not showing any symptoms (yet), but I've read that some cats can have salmonella poisoning without symptoms.

What do we do in this situation? I've never had this happen before. We'll stop feeding him this right away, but do we take him to the vet to get checked out?

For anyone who hasn't heard yet, here's a link to the letter from Natura about exactly which products are being recalled: http://www.naturapet.com/recall

I would absolutely err on the side of caution and take him to the vet for a checkup. Better to be safe than sorry and they may be able to take preventative measures so you don't end up at the ER vet. I would keep all your receipts and contact the company and ask for a reimbursement whether he has Salmonella or not.

And thank you for posting the link so that other members can be sure not to feed these potentially contaminated products!

Hopefully you don't have a tainted bag or that because he ate so little he doesn't get very sick.
vibes that he checks out happy and healthy!
