My Cat Zhu Zhu is missing and I'm totally distraught -- SHE'S BACK!

My friend was taking care of my cats so I could go on a much-anticipated holiday, but she contacted me a few days after I left to tell me she left the window open, and Zhu Zhu slipped out! Well, I hurried back home as soon as I could, but it still took 36 hours for me to get back. It's now been five days, and no sign of her, only one spotting by a neighbor the day she got out. I have posted signs around my neighborhood, talked with residents and walk around every morning and late at night, calling her name and shaking a bag of cat food. Nothing.

I have been looking at various lost cat websites for help, but they may not be applicable in my situation. I live in a fourth-story apartment (still haven't worked out how she got down) so there isn't much hope she will find her way back. I put dirty clothes around the entrance just in case. She is microchipped, but here is the thing...I live in Beijing. Not much in the way of animal control here, but I wouldn't like that anyway, as I don't think they check for microchips. There are so many small alleys (with thousands of hiding spots) or really tall high rises. Also, each high rise has a courtyard with roughly six or seven strays that the local women feed, so I have been in contact with these women, and tell them to notify me if any kitty resembling Zhu Zhu shows up. Nothing so far.

I know this is an essay, but I am so upset. I keep having dreams that I found her, only to wake up and realize she is still missing. My remaining cat is also pretty upset, and cries a lot (as do I)

But I don't want to give up, even though it is so soul-destroying to go out every day, with nothing, not even a sighting, to keep my hopes up. I know it has been only four or five days, so it is far too early to give up anyway. But questions for those with experience--would a humane trap work in an area with at least three dozen strays in the area? Also, I read that she should be close, but is it possible these strays chased her off? And also, she is an indoor-only cat that is extremely bold around people and other animals, so I think she would answer if called--does that mean I should get on my bike and look further afield?

Sorry for the essay, I am just so sad and want her back badly, and needing a few ideas to keep my spirits up and hope alive. I have read so many lost cat search tips, but they probably assume a situation that is far from Beijing...one without a zillion stray cats in the area (though I suppose this means plenty of food is available to her) and large backyards and garages that don't exist here....any ideas?

Thanks! I am trying to stay positive. A security guard told me today he thinks he saw my cat at night in the courtyard of their highrise eating food left out for the ferals, he was pretty positive once I showed him more pictures. Since that complex is really close to my apartment, I am going to try a kitty buffet under my window and see if she comes. I really hope he did see my kitty.....

:vibes::vibes::vibes: that it's her and you manage to get her. Have you tried going out in the middle of the night or very early morning?

Cats have been known to turn up weeks or months later, so it's too early to give up hope. More :vibes::vibes::vibes: that you find her.

I agree, don't give up hope! Keep looking and calling, I've had cats disappear for weeks and come back. Another cat may have chased her further then you think, so it wouldn't hurt to venture out further. It's nice to know that people feel the same about their animals all over the world. Other people are most likely your best hope, make fliers and pass them around, if you can, even offer a small reward. A hundred eyes sre better then two! Kids would be a good source too, they go everywhere, and all kids love animals. Here's some more vibes to bring her home, good luck!

OH dear, so very sorry about Zhu Zhu getting out that window. I agree with above and please don't give up hope. Cats to seem to find their way back to us and if you keep looking and spreading the word to everyone in the area someone will spot her. :cross: Mega vibes, hun, that your kitty is found very, very soon. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Thanks for all the good wishes, I can't give up on her just yet   The good thing is there are a lot of feeding stations where I live--so many fat ferals and women who overfeed them. I just haven't seen her show up at any of these feeding areas, and neither have these ladies...

If I were in your shoes, I would do all that has been thus far recommended - flyers, rescues, vet, pet stores...If Zhu Zhu is indoor, some pet dectectuves suggest a differner personality than a street wise cat tho I do not believe cats these days shd roam and she sounds indoor. Check cat in the bag and pet detective who have great ideas. Many indoor kitties never actually stray far from home but will be curiously afraid even to come to their person. J know -stress related but it is bard to imagine. A last resort may be to rent or borrow a humane trap with some of her fab food waiting inside. Often a video cam is helpful too. I know these sound extreme but you never know what works. I have a friend who found her cat ONE yr after he was lost post a car accident on her way home in an area neither she or her cat knew. So never give up!! Btw I have a ZuZu too -a blue point Siamese. Hood luck!!

Well, at least you know she is getting food if that helps in some small way. I am so sorry you are going through this and pray for Zhu Zhu to be seen and returned to you safely. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Thanks...it has been three weeks now, and this is not getting any better. No legit sightings, nothing when I go out to call/look for her. I feel so awful and guilty over the whole thing. Not many people around here understand (just a cat right?) but I am glad to have support here. The pain is so intense however, I am finding it hard to keep hope alive...she should be out and walking around, right?

Try not to give up hope. There are many stories like yours from others and often times they have a happy ending. I am wondering the same as Jcat. Is it possible someone has her indoors? Keeping up the vibes for dear Zhu Zhu to come home soon. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: :cross:

It is possible, and I am getting posters up as far and wide as I can (though street sweepers take them down quickly). I know there is a lot of food and shelter in the immediate area, but I am also concerned how far a curious kitty can roam in one month. Some websites suggest two miles!! Better get back to posting

Usually they will not roam too far from "familiarity" unless they are pushed out by other colony cats in the territory. Still sending vibes for your Zhu Zhu. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: to be found.

thanks for all the good wishes. I have a wildlife camera that I am rotating around the feeding stations, and a few possible sightings. Hopefully I can catch her one camera and start trapping. Any advice for how long I should keep a wildlife cam in a certain feeding area before moving on? There are at least six major feeding areas in a half-mile radius, not counting lone bowls...

Sharing the good news--my indoor-only kitty is back home after 3 1/2 months roaming the wild (okay, downtown Beijing). Pretty amazing, actually. I was sitting in bed reading when I heard a loud meowing outside my window. Didn't recognize the meow, but I thought I would check it out and give the poor kitty some food. Well, imagine my surprise when I see MY kitty in front of my building! She was a bit timid at first, but she slowly walked towards me. I scooped her up and rushed to the elevator--she didn't struggle very much, really! Quite healthy, considering she fell from a fourth floor window. Just a little dirty.

So all of you still searching for your kitties--don't give up hope! They are most likely out there somewhere, surviving. Funny thing is, none of my prodigious efforts to bring her home really worked. The posters, the wildlife camera, knocking on doors....these things do work for others, however. Just not me!

Still a bit miffed, however, that I have a GPS chip in my Ipad, but not in my kitty cat. Science, catch up!!
