Hi all! We just started our kitty Cooper on prednisolone 2 days ago for his IBD (he gets 10mg a day). His appetite hasn't been terrible prior to the prednisolone, but it needs to get better so he can put some weight back on.

Our vet says it typically takes 3-5 days for prednisolone to help increase appetite. Since Cooper has only had 2 doses, I'm not seeing any noticeable changes yet. I'm hoping I'll see improvement over the weekend.

Does anyone have any experience with this that they can share? Thank you!

Hi there. Im so sorry to hear about Cooper. My cat, Portia has pancreatitis and maybe IBD but we cant tell for sure since we havent done a biopsy. Shes currently exeriencing a pancreatitis attack and is also on 5mg of prednisolone ,2x daily. Ive been giving her 1/2 a tablet of cyproheptadine to help with her appetite. Its absolutely critical that she eat well to prevent hepatic lipidosis. If Cooper's appetite hasnt improved and if hes very little every day, then perhaps you could start him on an appetitie stimulant till the pred kicks in. Its important that he eat. I would ask the vet sooner rather than later, especially if he hasnt been eating well for a while and has lost weight. Also, what food are you giving him? With IBD, I know changing food is not really an easy option but just curious. Unfortunately, Ive never given just pred without an appetite stimulant as well so I dont know how long it takes for the appetite to come back.
