My 12 year old developed 3 abcess after his housemate attacked him in the middle of the night. I think they were scared of something outside. There was hair everywhere, but I examined him and found no blood or entrance wounds so thought he was all right. He limped on his front right leg the next day and seemed better. Then on the third day he couldn't hardly walk and was favoring his hind legs too. His front leg was swollen. I took him into the vet who told me they needed to be lanced and drains put in. Can anyone tell me what I'm in for? How do I keep him from pulling the drains out?

I imagine he vet should give you one of those surgery collars for him to wear as well as give him antibiotics that should help clear up the infection. Mine got an abscess once years ago (we don't know from what) and after having her infection drained, they put stitches on her and a surgery collar until it was time to remove the stitches.
However, I would be more concerned about asking your vet how to handle the situation since you have another cat in the house. For example, would the other cat pull out his drains, or should he get seperated to not risk getting hurt again? I'm not too savvy in the area of owning multiple cats (Only have had 1), so I can't really tell you, just ask your vet.
Also, see if you can determined what it was exactly that spooked the other cat because you'd want to avoid more attacks in the future...

Good luck!

Thank you for your prompt reply, my other cat is young, 5 years old, and highly excitable. He often 'jumps' on to poor old Burt and nips him. Then runs away. This especially happens when he wants to go outside and can't. It's gotten to the point where we will yell 'no!' and he runs, but I wish we could come up with something that would keep him from jumping on poor old Burt in the first place. Any one have any ideas?

You know, I thought of that, but all I can picture is BOTH of them jumping on poor old Burt! I just wish Casper would get some age on him and settle down, or Burt would hiss at him, that's what my Chrissy used to do, and he stayed his distance.

To answer your original question, the vet will be able to help you with this abcess issue. They don't sound real, real bad so I imagine your kitty will recover quickly with a little bit of quiet and some antibiotics. Do as the vet suggests and maybe try to keep the older cat quiet for some recovery time :D
