where to go to adopt?

I have a dilemma.

My husband say that if we DO adopt another kitty he wants to get it from animal control. But I was looking at the rescues for siamese.

Animal control is a death sentence for animals and rescues are a haven. Is it better to go to animal control and really save a life or do I go with what I want to do?

I never thought about the pound when we got Amber, we had just naturally gone to the Humane Society. But both my sisters in law went to the pound for their kittys.

please, any points of views or anything...?

One thing to mention to your husband is that many breed rescue groups will rescue/take "apparent" purebreds or posibble mixes of the dominant breed, out of the shelter...sometimes just in time. By adopting a kitty from a rescue group or a no-kill shelter, you free up their space to take another kitty in, sometimes off "death row", and that in turn also free's up a will-kill shelter's space to keep another kitty a bit longer.

I.e. the two American Curl's in the Santa Clara, CA area where my group found a foster angel to take them out of a will-kill situation where time was almost up. It then freed up the special needs area of this shelter to keep another 1 or 2 kitties alive longer, giving them a chance for adoption.

best wishes whatever you do,

Well , it depents (sp) how you feel about things . If you really want to save a life , then go to a kill shelter or animal controll . If you want a pure breed , well then go on pets finder and look .

I wanted one more Selkirk Rex cat since I love their sweet disposition . Well , there came along the stray/feral kitten what needet a home . You guessed right I rather took the stray/feral kitten then the other one . Even though it break my heart not getting the other one I wanted . But the reward is sooooooooo much more .

yeah, I understand that there are so many animals that needs homes and there are not enough to go around.

Pat & Alix, that is so perfectly stated!

Its heartbreaking to think about all the homeless animals out there. We can only do so much. All your responses give me something to mull over.

Wow I call the humane society the pound
Its the same thing. Kill shelter.

I say go for rescuing a kitty on death row.. but ultimately its your decision. Good luck with whatever you decide!

remember Pound Puppies? I wonder how many animals got adopted from marketing those toys.

I am going to the pound when the time comes (hopefully soon).

Thanks everyone.

That is a choice that only you can make, there are several options. What has always worked best for me is checking several options, and finding the animal I seem to connect with. No matter where you decide to go, you are helping out a little one. I wanted to state again, what was mentioned before, there are breed groups that will take animals out of shelters until they can find them a home. Good luck, let all of us know how things work out.

We got Watson from the SPCA and we got Mittens from a couple that wanted to get rid of him
That made me mad because the husband didn't want to change his litterbox while she was pregnant...so we got him instead! BTYQ, I would go the the animal control first because you might be able to find a baby that you will love just as much as any kitty. Good luck!!

There's no place like home
www.petfinder.com is a great place to start. Both kill and no-kill shelters post their cats there.

Another perspective for you: No-kill shelters often take pets from the kill shelters. If you adopt from a no-kill, it makes room for them to save more pets from the kill shelters. Not sure if they all work like that, but that is how HELP does it (www.helppets.org)

I have been browsing petfinder here and there. Currently there is a white cat available with one blue and one green eye! I am aware that some cats get a second chance through rescues going into the kill shelters and taking some cats out. I didnt realize they did that.

As long as you adopt a cat, whether it's from a rescue or a shelter or pound, you will be providing a home & saving a life. Our local no-kill shelter goes to the pound regularly to pick out adoptable animals to bring to the shelter. So do the purebreed rescue groups. Wherever you go, choose a cat that you love - he or she will be with you for many years.

Thats nicely put. I understand that and I wish I can save them all!

The Starfish
A father and daughter walked along the beach. As the young girl ran and played farther and farther away the father looked dreamily out over the water. When he was closer he could see his daughter throwing things into the water and running back and picking up more. He asked, "What are you doing?" She replied, "Throwing these starfish back into the water." Puzzled, the father said, "But there are thousands of starfish all along the beach. You cant possibly save them all. What does it matter?" The girl stopped, looked up at her father, and held out a starfish. "It matters to this one daddy."
