I'm trying to do right by my recently adopted 9 month-old kitten and get him off his off shelter dry food and eating all canned.  Over the past two and a half weeks, I've gradually replaced out his Purina One dry with mostly EVO dry.  Meanwhile, I've been trying all kinds of canned to find one he likes.  It's been very tough, but I've gotten him to the point where he expects (and now whines for) wet food in the evening, and he'll finish some or most of a serving.  EVO duck and turkey & chicken are the only brands he seems to like.

So far, so good.  But for the past three days straight, he's had really watery stools. He's also been suddenly less interested in the wet food, making me think it might be upsetting his stomach.  Many posters have said that this stuff happens when the transition to a high-protein food like EVO is too quick.

Question is, should I just ride this out, since he seems to be on the right track with the transition?  Or should I backtrack, either feeding less canned per sitting or decreasing the EVO in his dry mix (I feel like the switch with the dry was pretty gradual).  Or I should try to find a different canned food (i.e. not grain-free) to feed at least during the transition to wet??

Before anything, do you know that there was a recent recall of some EVO dry food for salmonella concerns? If not, please check your batch numbers. There were also some reported concerns (but no recall) of EVO cans.

I would try a different no grain canned food to rule out EVO as a problem.

Thanks.  I do know about the recall.  My bag of the dry does fall outside of the affected lot numbers.  I'm still experimenting with other no-grain brands of canned, so I'll keep looking for something else he likes, but he's tried most of them without any luck.  Still, though, I'm wondering whether the introduction of wet (as opposed to changing dry brands) needs to be more gradual or should be done at the pace the cat accepts it.

You could try Merrick Before Grain, it's mostly meat like EVO so he might like it. Changing brands of wet food won't cause stomach issues. Has he been treated for worms? Most shelter kitties will have them and GI symptoms are a symptom. He does look a little thin too.

He is adorable! I love black and white kitties. Do you have more pics?

He's had two standard de-worming pills over the past three weeks, so it's hopefully not that. He does have a lanky build, but he weighed in at 9 pounds at his vet visit Monday. He hadn't developed the stool issue yet, so I didn't ask the vet. He is super cute! I'll dig up another photo.

My initial reaction is to suggest reducing the Evo in the dry. It can take several weeks to transition a cat to a new kibble. Wet not as much. I would try one thing at a time and not too much since he's done so well thus far. But the loose stools are worrisome and you'll want to take care of that quickly if you can. If it were me, I would first call the vet and get their reaction. I would follow their advice on it but if I was not able to call a vet, I would reduce the kibble and see what happens. If that didn't work, I'd work on the wet the same way.

Maybe a little more solid today, but still loose.  He seems to have regained his appetite for the canned (and in general), so I don't think his stomach is upset--he hasn't vomited or acted funny either.  I've decreased the EVO in his dry mix, and will be picking up some non-EVO cans tonight.
