We have 2 rescues as indoor cats and 1 indoor/outdoor as a litter box user as well.  We use a clumping multi-cat litter from tidy cat and have several boxes in the house.

The problem is litter all over the floor around the box.  When they exit the box  all are "feet shakers".

When I go to the beach I enjoy the feeling of sand on my feet but not around the house and not litter between my toes!

Anyway, does anybody market a litter box that the design would minimize the loose litter due to foot shaking when they exit?

But in your opinion or experience do they work to keep litter in the box?

I have one cat that actually kicks litter out of the box. The only way I keep it from all over is to put a small rug in front of the box, then I can shake it out outside. It does work to keep it in one place.

Our last cat was too big/long for those boxes, and the current one is using his jumbo "multi-cat" box, so I can't tell you from personal experience. I use an X-Large Petmate Litter Catcher Mat which cuts down on all the litter on the floor. My niece's Maine Coon has the Booda box and doesn't get litter all over.

The litter catching mats really help. They trap little pieces of litter when they shake it off their toes. A good shake outside keeps it in good shape.

Maybe I will try one of the top open boxes.
We have the litter catch rugs at all boxes ad yes they do help but. These cats love the litter box...some will even cry to come in and use it after they have been out for a while.
One is part maine coone so we have the foot hair issue as well
Its' just that experimentling these days is so expensive with boxes costing $35 and up.
Thanks for all your input.

I just keep a broom handy and sweep the floor before walking in the laundry room where the box is.

I'm not sure what a top open box is - but if it is the one where entry is through a hole at the top, I wouldn't use this.  The contortions on the cat's body doing this as they age is not desirable, or the good chance they land with their feet in someone else's business.  Then you have the air quality problem, and basically, I'd say it is a box that asks for litter box problems.

On the other hand, if you speak about a box with higher walls and the top open, that sounds good.

Can you fashion a litter mat to surround the box so all sides are taken care of?

The best thing I found are these Rubbermaid big black stacking boxes made for organizing things. They are sold at Walmart for $6-8 and are huge with a giant opening. I'm about to go get a third as our baby is being one of those "I'm now the queen and need my own". I'm going to stack it and leave the top off. She is the only one who will jump to use it. As far as litter I use the catchers and then a bigger area rug from ikea I got for like $14. It keeps the litter on that area way easier to clean. Also the dyson is a miracle vacuum. I've resigned to scooping twice a day and then vacuuming. It's helped tremendously.

I have a similar issue with litter tread half way round the house and got to the point where I thought about the top entry boxes but ruled out for the reasons Tammyp has listed. I suspect it wouldn't have worked any better anyway as Mouse often leaps out of the box like a mouse just called him from the next room
.  Would probably just leap higher and take it even further with top opening....  Mouse uses a big, deep tray, covered box (Booda Roundabout that I don't think you can get anymore which is a shame), a litter mat AND deep pile rug in front of the tray and it still goes everywhere.  I use fine clumping litter but a the other stuff we used before gave the same problems - just got even bigger crumbs under my feat:(   I would so love it if someone came up with a way to keep what should be in the box - in the box. It's the brush and pan / hoover for me too until then.   I know the people I got Mouse from use the big deep 'trugs' or buckets sort of like what Tammyp mentions - they find they work well for male cats but again I'm not sure how you manage change as a cat gets less mobile.  I think the really high sides work well for containing enthusiastic digging though

Yeah, I spend a lot of time sweeping the laundry room floor!
I was using the large sized doggy training pads under the boxes for the new cats we took in because one was peeing outside the box. He doesn't do that any more but I keep using the pads because they make it easier to clean up the tracked litter.  I just shake them out and they last awhile.
