Hi,

I just wondering whether or not anyone has had anything similar, I have a 1 year old male grey & white short haired cat..

Long story short, my partners cats became ill about 4 weeks ago and one was sick with a pretty big thread like worm in it and the others 3rd eyelids were showing, both constantly licking genitals etc...  I told my partner he must get them to the vet and get advice etc, he would not go and said that he had treated his cats for worms before, so would just go and get the medication ( I wasn't impressed by this as Brody is so precious to me) so I said ok but if Brody starts showing any signs of being ill I will be taking him straight to the vet..

I had to take Brody to emergency vet last Sunday morning, the majority of his eyes were covered with third eyelid, temperature, diarrhoea, kept distancing himself away which is not like him at all, intermittent breathing pattern and he just looked generally unhappy and I can't bare to see him like that, the vets said that he didn't seem too bad gave him some antibiotics and said to keep a close eye on him for 24 hrs..

Later that day he had hidden himself away and couldn't even stand up, so I rushed him back to hospital where he was placed on a drip and antibiotics, they kept him in over night and then I took him to my vets to further tests - they kept him on a drip and tested him for:

*FIV

*FELV

*Blood tests for vital organs, blood cells

*Wormed

*Gastro intest feline

All results were clear, and he had perked up so I brought him home, I kept him away from the other cats completely, new bed and food bowls and threw anything away i felt may be a risk, he didn't go outside either. He had a good week and getting back to normal.

Friday afternoon, he went rapidly into decline, this time he was almost doubling up in pain, couldn't sit still, curling up in a tight ball and third eyelids returned to covering the majority of his eye, there was chronic diarrhoea that smelt absolutely horrendous and was as yellow as mustard with white slimy bits in it, it was constant and you could see that it was causing him a lot of pain, he then started to have convulsions in his back and would not come anywhere near me at all, Brody is so loyal and loving to me we are never apart, then when he finally came over to me he was constantly shaking, and I was absolutely frantic as he just looked as if he was going, I jumped in the car and took back to emergency vet at 10.30pm, he got there and they again put him on a drip and antibiotics, they said they would see how he goes and have a plan for rest of the weekend, they called to say that they thought it best that he returns home and go to normal vets on Monday as they need a pooh sample so it could be diagnosed what it is that is causing this, his temp had come down, he had no diarrhoea and was on the mend, I must admit I was totally shocked as he had been so very ill the night before but was so happy that he was ok but confused how it just stopped but then assumed it would be the fluids and antibiotics..

We arrived home mid to late afternoon, and as soon as we got home he did the biggest diarreah same colour, same odour, all over the carpet, he then could not stop wiping his bum across the floor making tracks everywhere, and then he had continuous diarrhoea after that, and went straight back to all the symptoms before, I rang the vet straight away and they said that is quite normal for a cat to have diarrhoea short after and to just keep an eye on him and make sure he is eating but more importantly drinking plenty, so I kept an eye on him and things calmed but he was still not right, I popped out for an hour and when I returned he was hid underneath a cupboard and would not come out, also noticed that he had not touched any food or water, rang the vets again and they said to try tuna and spring water as the water has taste to it, he loved it but as soon as he had drank that it came straight out the other end bright yellow same stench, he continued this for another hour, I rang the vets again for more advice and they said that I just needed to keep him warn and the fluids going as it would be pointless taking him in as they wouldn't do anything different and I had a bill of £1600 already, so I got camped out in the same room as him and he was just deteriorating by the hour, he kept shaking, opening his mouth for no reason, couldn't stay still due to pain and I just couldn't bare to see him like that so took him in again, they said that he didn't look right and his eyelids showing more but his heart was ok, tummy seemed fine, bit of a full bladder, slight temp but were keeping him in as there is something not right and needs diagnosing - I had also said that he was showing all of the symptoms for Parvo (panleukopenia) and was just heartbroken as we are so close I know there is something seriously not right, I was then told that this is rare and mainly dogs get it??? I wasn't buying that and just wanted a full diagnosis to ensure that we know what the problem is..

So I went back this evening to see how he is and they have said that he is fine!!!!!! He has not been to the toilet, he is eating ok and purring and generally happy in himself, I can still see some signs in him though the twitching of the back, he is still doing that funny tasting thing with his mouth and licking his genitals a lot and seems quite nervy, so they have said to pick up in the morning take to my vets and have a few more tests as they are sure that he will do sample so i can take it with me.

I have just got off the phone and he has not gone to the toilet once, seems generally churpy and purring and eating and drinking plenty!!!!!

What on earth is going on, has anyone else had anything like this?????

I did read that cats are good at disguising illness in certain instances, please let me know as I am utterly lost and just want my bestest bud Brody back.

Many thanks

x

It sounds like you're trying to keep on top of this.  It's possible the other cats had this first and gave it to him.  It could be what you suspect, or feline distemper, or even something as simple as salmonella poisoning.

It definitely sounds like an internal parasite or intestinal infection.  I have had experience with IBS in a cat and it is nothing like this.  If the cat had worms, it generally means it had fleas at one point too.  It is possible the cat is super sensitive to the worms, or even the worm medication if it was given?  Your room mate said he would get the worm medication... maybe that was what actually caused all this if the cat was given the wrong one or too much or is just sensitive to it.

It could be sooo many things.  All I can say is to hang in there, you know when something is wrong and are obviously taking every step you can to make sure your kitty is healthy.  Think good thoughts and get back into the vet when you can.  Have them run a full blood work if they haven't already, it will usually expose many other rarer things.

Hey Kitty Queen,
Thanks for your reply, it's just so heartbreaking to see him like it & I think I made it worse by looking things up on Internet!!!
Back to pick him up 7:30 then straight to local vet..

I don't suppose you know why he's not having these issues at the vets??
Chronic, every 15/20 mins to absolutely nothing at all at the vets!

I think if I'd only seen 1 vet then I would do, but due to the fact he's been to an Emergency vet (hence the massive bills) and then back to my usual vet... I must admit I do find it very strange there has been no diagnosis as yet or even a pooh sample!!! I'll see what happens today once I've picked him up & taken him to usual vets...
If I'm not happy I'll do what you've suggested, I'm just so worried it'll be that parvo..
Many thanks

Yeah I know it's also known as feline panleukopenia, it's awful & had the majority of symptoms :(
Going to get all tests done later today

Since this happens only when Brody is at home, have you checked the cat food?  There have been several cases of food poisoning in cat food in the past couple of years.

All cats have been sick, so this is a possibility.  Especially since Brody improves when at the vet -> different food?

Hey,
Sorry not been back sooner, I took Brody away for a few days to a little hotel where I grew up as he was very ill & I wasn't sure if he'd make it...
There are still no results back, but the mini break seemed to do the trick..
He's still not quite right with his 3rd eyelids partially showing, but he's definitely perked up, his breathing is still a little weird when he's laid sleeping, he's eating & drinking a little more but not as he used to be...
I just need these results back to know what is going to best for my little man...
I have to say I've never felt heartache like it, he's a little fighter for sure..
Thank you for all your messages, you're all so very kind..
Jo & Brody xx

Yes I've changed his food from the start, he's not got diarrhoea now, seems not to want to go at all...
Thanks for your message x
