I am fostering a nursing cat and 5 kittens. Momma cat is sneezing and her face is always wet from the runny nose and eyes. I hear sneezing coming from the kittens when the momma cat isn't with them and two of the kittens have a crusty eye. I weighed each of them today to be sure they progress. The scariest thing is the smallest kitten(3 and 3/4 ounces) is one of the two with the crusty eye. I have begun to supplement with a bottle and kitten formula because of its size compared to its littermates who are 8 - 10 ounces. I wipe their eyes to keep them clean. I wash the momma's face as well. The animal shelter has given me these instructions and said that the momma cat has already had 14 days of antibiotics and to wait a few more days.  I am horrified for the littlest kitten. I feed her by holding her belly down and dropping a drop onto her tongue and waiting a bit before repeating. When she looks like she's falling asleep I stop. It's scary to watch because falling asleep and dying look the same to me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Some forumites use L-lysine for URI´s. They feel it helps quite well.  This may surely help the mom, but I guess you can give some to the little one too.

You can get L-lysine in powder, so it is easy to mix into anything.

About the wiping off. Do you have salt in the water?  A teaspoon salt in a litre. So the water feels a little salty - almost barely.

The weight and the exact changes there are easier to observe if the scale is in grammes.

Lets hope others fill in!

Keep reporting!

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips. I just cleaned them all up again and used the salt in the water.

Sadly the smallest did not make it through that night. We found it the next morning and one of its siblings laboring to breath. We took him to the vet yesterday who put him in an oxygen box, gave him fluids, an antibiotic and an anti inflamatory. We took him home and my husband fashioned an oxygen box for him. He made it through the night much to our surprise but still labors to breath. His belly seems full but we supplement with a little syrup dabbed on his tongue. He is supposed to get a liquid antibiotic each day. It worries me to put any liquid in his mouth with the way he's breathing. A drop on his tongue just sits there even if you rub his neck. It's heart wrenching to watch him gasp for air.

Thank you for your reply and warm welcome.
