Hello everyone, just looking for some advice on what may be the latest addition to our family...

We first noticed Carrera a few months ago. The woman living across the street from us abandoned some cats many months ago and this awesome lady has been coming to feed and care for them every day. She feeds the cats the woman left behind that are living inside the home and she also leaves food out for some strays that hang out around the neighborhood. Carrera is one of those strays, but Carrera isn't like most strays because while he is a bit skiddish he will still walk right up to you if you try to coax him over and he loves to be petted.

The lady caring for the cats just found out recently that the house the cats are living in is going to be foreclosed on and she is going to have to move the cats that are living inside there. She asked me if my fiance and I would feed Carrera when she moved the other cats since she will not have to come over this way anymore. I agreed, but I absolutely hate the thought of a cat living outside.

I am very willing to accept Carrera into our home and have made him a vet appt for next week. When Carrera was out earlier today I had my fiance coax him onto our screened in back porch with some food, and he is still there right now. He seems a bit scared but once we pet him he seems to calm down.

I have to keep him seperated from our other cats until he goes to the vet and gets a clean bill of health, but my question is whether it would be easier for Carrera to acclimate if we left him on our screened in porch or brought him inside to stay in one of our spare bathrooms. I don't want to scare him too much bringing him inside too quickly, but I feel a little bad just keeping him on our porch as well.

If anyone has any thoughts or advice on this I would really appreciate it. Thanks! :)

I shall try and write an ansfer to you during the day tomorrow, after sleeping on it and thinking on a little...

See you!

Good luck!

First off, how awful that someone abandoned those cats in that house! But a wonderful samaritan came along to feed and care for them. I hope she has good luck with moving all of the cats. :cross:

AND looks like you have a new addition, Carrera. :rub: IF the porch is secure, safe and comfortable for Carrera (make sure he cannot escape!), then I would keep him in there until the vet visit. Have some warm hidey holes for him to snuggle up in and feel safe. You can even turn a cat carrier into a den by taking the door off and covering it with a blanket. Put some nice blankets inside the carrier for his comfort while he waits for the vet visit. Then while he is at the vet, prepare the spare bedroom and have it all ready with his necessities upon his return. No more porch at that point. :D Have a stool check done too. This is the part that takes some time. IF he had worms and it is likely, then he will need to be confined for the two dosings AND then you have to wait another two weeks to run a stool check again. If clear, then it is safe to allow your other cats to investigate his room and his cat box. You don't want to risk your other kitties getting a parasite. Wonderful of you to rescue him. He sounds very, very sweet. Keep us posted. VIBES for the other kitties too. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

p.s. If he was positive for worms, make sure you dump and scrub the litter box immediately after each deworming. Fill with fresh litter. Just a tip!!!! ;)

"Screened off" means closed in, so he cant go away?  If so, I do it easy for me and just second in 100% Feralvs wise advices.   :)

But if there is a real danger for him to go away from the porch, and risk the dangers on the street, it is better (=safer) to take him in into this quarantine room you had prepared.

Make sure he has no fleas. you dont want do defleas this room too.

There is a medicine, Capstar, which works instantly, good in such cases.  You must follow  up with a more regular long term anti-fleaser, but for the nearest days you are OK.  (if in hurry to take in, take him into the bathroom, give him the Capstar there, etc... A bathroom is easy to clean up)

This is what I was pondering on...  If you are sure he will stay on an open porch, both solution were feasible. But you arent, he was in so far living in another place.  So my advice riped during the night was to take him in into the quarantine room.

But. If "screened porch" means totally glassed in - whoah, what an elegant solution!

Tx a lot to you and this samaritan lady.

Good luck!
