Emma's kittens are 5 weeks old today and still nursing great. I keep putting out kitten food for them but they won't try it. They prefer to nurse from mama instead and he food doesn't entice them. I've been trying for several days now. When might they start? I don't want them to get sick and lose them. THey're acting great and playful and perfectly normal after the calicivirus scare. Wormed them and everything. We love them to pieces! They just prefer nursing.

I agree, mom will wean them. I always started with canned food and they would fight over it, maybe they don't like what you are offering them? As for a certain age of weaning, my boy Casper got to nurse until he was 6 monthes old!  He was just 21/2  months old when his mom had a second litter and he would just move the newborns to the side! Mom never did try to stop him, and kept nursing him even after the others were gone. She FINALLY got tired of him. Needless to say she was brought in to be spayed when the kittens were just 8 weeks old.

As long as momma has the right nutrition, the kittens won't get sick. 5 weeks is still very young and although some start eating canned food at 4 weeks, it can be longer before they do so. Even when they start eating on their own, it's still good to continue to allow them to nurse for several weeks longer. Like stated above, momma knows when it's time for them to stop. She'll start getting up and moving away when she's had enough.
