Is it normal for a sphynx to have only 1 kitten? This is the second time in 2 years that she gave birth to only 1 kitten. Is there something wrong with her fertility or could it be the male with a problem? Thanks.
Did her mother have big litters? Her grandmother? What's a normal litter size for the breed? Are these the only 2 litters she has had? If she had another bigger one was it the same male? What's his track record with other females?
Thanks for the reply. Actually her mother had about 4 kittens the first time but I don't know much more because I bought her as a breeding cat so I don't know much about her mother. Usually sphynx have larger litters. Between 2 to 6 is normal. She only had 2 litters with the same male but now I imported a new male so I will mate her with him at the end of this year. The boy that got her pregnant only mated with her for now. Recently I read some articles on the internet and I got confused because it said that you should mate her at the end of her heat cycle because the eggs produced will multiply each day and in another article I read that if you mate her at the first sign of heat it's better because the eggs will start to die at the end of her cycle so I'm a bit confused now.
Mate her as soon as she will accept the male and let them continue mating at their pleasure.
Cats are induced ovulators, the first mating starts the process leading to ovulation a day or so later, but the later matings are more likely to be the ones leading to conception. Cats left to natural mating will mate a lot over several days - as many as the queen will accept the tom - so I imagine that's what they are best adapted to doing.
There is a school of thought that letting them mate over too many days can lead to kittens of different gestational ages, I don't subscribe to it.
How maqny litters she has depends on how well she holds her condition. Some cats hardly lose condition having kittens, others turn into a bag of bones, but there's no point in leaving her calling and losing condition. Depends also how if you are having problems finding homes for the kittens.
Breeding several times over a period of days is the best bet, but please watch them carefully when they are together. Males can be extremely rough during the mating, and wounds to her neck and sides are very possible, especially if he is a much larger male. Supposedly a female can be mated as much as 20 times in one day. (
) but I wouldn't suggest it.
I've "heard" that feeding high value kitten chow while in call can help stimulate? But I have no idea if that's true or not.
Edit
If she's having one or two kittens at a time, staying healthy, not losing weight/muscle, 8 months or so shouldn't be a problem. But if you take into account the two+ months of pregnancy, plus the two+ months of growing/weaning time, it only gives her-and you- four months between each pregnancy. unless you meant 8 months from the kitten(s) being able to leave and not 8 months from conception?
Actually she gave birth last August but the kitten died after few hours so my vet told me that it's ok to mate her again after a few months since she didn't loose any weight and kept her condition. Now she had another kitten last Sunday and they are both doing fine. I feed them royal canine sphynx which is the best food for them. It's better than kitten food and queens food.
She could probably have been mated quite a bit sooner after losing her kitten - maybe on her 2nd call afterwards - if she was in good bodily condition.
