So our little boy is now 3 months old, almost 4 months. He came to us.on royal canin and had runny poop. He was wormed by the vet and no change. We started giving him half canned foods and half dry which gave him extremely watery diarrhea so we put him back on just royal canin. He still had the water diarrhea and he has no worms or anything. Just yesterday I started him back on grain free canned (halo lamb flavored) with prozyme mixed in(this stuff worked miracles for my german shepherd). What else can I try for my poor baby boy his vet wants to run all these tests on him which i'll do but i'm wondering if maybe a simple food change will help him. Seems like all the stress of going back and forth to the vets does nothing but aggrevate his issues.

A little over a week ago we adopted a 9-month-old with the same problem from a shelter that was feeding him RC Intestinal dry. I switched him to grain-free canned only and am adding a teaspoonful of pumpkin (100% pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling) to each meal. His stool is still soft, but there's been a definite improvement in its consistency and odor. Treats are also grain-free (freeze-dried meat).

Yeah, you don't want a 12 week old kitten having constant diarrhea. I would ask the vet for Hill's W/D canned for a few days. This will firm up the babies stool and if not, then that might be a sign of intestinal parasites that still need to be treated. Not all parasites will show up on a fecal float. What was the kitten dewormed with? How far apart were the dosages? Did you wait two weeks and run another fecal to make sure it was clear?

You can also try human baby food jars with real meat only. This will also help for a day or two. A people probiotic will help too but not sure how much to give a little kitten, probably 1/3 - 1/2 capsule sprinkled on food. This is the one some of us use here
Stress with the added diet change, vaccinations and dewormings can all be the culprit behind kitten diarrhea. If it were me, I would get the W/D canned for a day or so. Then begin adding in a good quality canned kitten food with the W/D. Do this very slowly. I think things will improve then. :cross: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

He was given panacur(safeguard) we did a 3 day treatment and than repeated in 2 weeks. His decals have always been clean though. I'll ask for the special diet for and pick some up for him. He eats like a horse, drinks like a champ, and has boundless kitten energy. I don't mind getting the extra tests done but i wanted to try a diet change first. He gets probiotics called prozymes(it's white powder in a bottle) just a little sprinkle mixed in his canned. My German shepherd has done wonders since being on it.

You can always try with giving him pedialyte as drinking water.  It IS in some extent diarrhea stopping. And also gives some electrolyte, as he is surely losing salts / electroytes with these watery diarrheas.

A homemade pedialyte is:

1 litre water

1,5 soup spoon (15-18 grammes) of dextrose (=glucose sugar).  If you dont have dextrose, you can use honey or white caro syrup. Even common sugar can be used. Dextrose is best.

1 tea spoon (3 grammes) of kitchen salt.  The so called minerale kitchen salt is best, but common

kitchen salt is OK.

Boil up so everything stirs. Cool down to body temp.  Give.  dont spare too long, better make anew.

Useful for cats, children etc...

Good luck!

That is what we are doing we started him on canned grain free with the probiotics. I'm looking into dry grain free foods as well for him. No poop yet since late last night so can't judge if the new food/probiotics have helped or not.

Have you considered doing a raw food diet? He's young enough that it shouldn't be a problem and that helps A LOT of kitties with these issues.

I second the raw diet. Cleared my cats' diarrhea up fast.

I would also caution you about dry foods; cats need more water in their diet. Check out www.catinfo.org for reasons to put a cat on a wet diet.

Are you sure Prozyme is a probiotic?  I give my cats Prozyme AND the  probiotic Lauren referenced above.  Prozyme is a digestive enzyme (white bottle, red label...white powder inside)

Prozyme Plus is the digestive enzyme and probiotic included, I thought Prozyme was the probiotic?

I have the prozyme plus because regular prozyme has lactose.

He was on a half dry half canned diet as both the other cats are too i was thinking canned food was to much for him and he went back to dry food but seeing as all dry didn't make a difference i started him on grain free canned with the prozyme powder. I would prefer to keep him on canned as a majority of his diet though.

At this time i can not do home made raw canned grain free is a good as i can do. Unless medically he had to be on raw but right now it's not feasible for us.

Well after two days of no poop(and me being worried he was constipated) he had a solid poop this afternoon! I went out and got him more halo lamb flavored and natures variety venison and duck(I think) I tried to pick the more uncommon proteins. Not sure if the prozyme or the canned food is what helped him most but I was very excited for a finally solid poop!

 I hope he continues to have solid poop! Dealing with constant diarrhea is no fun for anyone.

I'm betting it's both.. Grains turn to sugar and that can cause lots of issues with the poops for kitties. They were not designed to eat all that sugar and carbs. This is great!!!
