I have been told that garlic is toxic to cats.

My question is why do companies sell garlic tablets to cats as a way to prevent ticks?

If I remember correctly, I think I read that the amount that is harmful to cats is around one clove or one Teaspoon of Garlic Powder.

That being said, it can cause severe (even fatal) anemia, so I would dramatically limit the amount they consume

or eliminate it completely.

A safer option is Brewer's Yeast.

I mix about 2 teaspoons in my Ferals' wet food a few times per week.,

which is shared among 5 or 6 Kitties most of the time.

As far as "Why" do they sell it... because they "can."

Same as the many ingredients in cat food that WE know should not be there.

Sadly, it is all about the profit potential with some comapnies.  

I think it's safe in very small doses, but the amount considered safe is debatable, so most of us choose to avoid it entirely. Better safe than sorry.

no there not safe for dogs dogs can't gave garlic either

I once used garlic tabs on my dogs for a year with no ill effects. Didn't do much about the fleas or ticks though :lol3:. That brand had brewer's yeast in it too. . .:tongue2: As long as you're reasonable about the amounts, garlic is a lot less toxic than onions.

Cats are a bit more sensitive to garlic. The brand I used said "not recommended for use in cats".

Here is an article why garlic is toxic to pets. I would not give my dogs or cats garlic. Not even in small doses.
