Spay problem? Very concerned!

I got two strays outside my house spayed Thursday morning and I plan to take them back next Monday to get the stitches taken out. They are both staying locked up in my bathroom until then.

They both get a syringe of pain meds, once a day, and they each only have one dose left.

The black cat, which I have not caught pulling at her stitches, is doing fine. She even got brave and started jumping into my bathtub to sleep!

The calico, which pulled at her stitches the first couple hours after we brought them home after surgery but doesn't bother them now, seems to be miserable. I just gave them their pain meds for the day, and I noticed that she seemed really swollen in her belly and that she would jerk if I touched anywhere around that area. When I set her back down, she just instantly layed her back half down, like she didn't want to stand at all. I don't exactly know how to explain it, and I may just be a worry wart, but she did it in a way that seemed to me like it hurt to stand; although she may just be tired or may just need time for the meds to kick in again. The calico seems very swollen compared to the black cat, but she was a couple weeks pregnant when they spayed her and the black cat wasn't-- would that make a difference?

Anyway, my vet isn't open today and I'm a very nervous nelly! Not only do I want to make sure they are both okay, but I want them to be as comfortable as possible too! Any suggestions, concerns? Help!

I'm wondering if posting pictures of the stitches and their bellies in general will help? I'm not sure how to post pictures though...

Sound a bit off that she is not more up.  Post pics it may help:)

Further along will take it a bit harder for sure.  If she pulled at stiches she could have undone something.  I would call anyways just so your number shows up-and in case vet stops in will see missed call.

Some meds need to go UNDER tounge to be 100% effective.  Anyway to seperate them to make sure she is eating/drinking(I know you have issues with landlord-maybe a closet or something just for an hour or so) as that will be what vet asks first.  Also some cats do not do good with pain meds-was she ok till you gave her a dose or its been consistant?

You had already got a good answer. I want to add: spaying in early stages, two weeks, shall not make it more complicated in itself.

Second, yes, she has some sort of complication. If really serious or not and will go over by itself, I dont want to guess. But it is not being just fine "clear cut" no.

Contact your vet if at all possible. Phone at least.

Phoning and taking advice you can perhaps from some other vet too?

Does she seems to have fever?  You can compare these two cats with each other, if you dont want to stress her and take the fever in the behind.

Good luck!

ps. On plus-side is, homeless are made of tough wood, otherwise they should perish  before they got adult. Probably just in weeks.

They usually do have "good healing meat" as the saying is in Swedish.  So the odds are on your and her side.  That said, there is surely problem of some sort yes, and consulting a vet is well advised.

I posted some pics, they should be up when a mod approves it? Looking at the pics, I can side a huge side-by-side difference. It makes me more concerned about infection and swelling.

Since giving the meds about an hour ago, the calico seems to be a little bit more active. She came up to me for petting when I checked on them but wasn't pushy about it like she usually is. They told me when they did her surgery that its a little more complicated when the cat is pregnant, but they didn't tell me how far along she was. They said they would have to charge extra if kittens were developed enough to need euthanized and they didn't charge me for that so I'm guessing she wasn't really far along. She was far enough along that the vet took one look at her and knew she was prego, so that makes me worry a little too.

I will separate the black one to my sons room when nap time is over and see if she eats and uses the litterbox like she should.

The waiting game...sigh~

Is she eating and drinking water? if not, you must make sure she does drinks, you dont want her to be dehydrated.  Keep her hydrated and warm...  Forcefeed water if necessary.

she coming up for some petting is not she is better, the pain killer is on, so she doesnt suffer so much...

Lets hope the pain killer also takes down the inflammation.

A homemade pedialyte is:

1 litre water

1,5 soup spoon (18-18 grammes) of dextrose (=glucose sugar).  If you dont have dextrose, you can use honey or white caro syrup. Even common sugar can be used. Dextrose is best.

1 tea spoon (3 grammes) of kitchen salt.  The so called minerale kitchen salt is best, but common

kitchen salt is OK.

Boil up so everything stirs. Cool down to body temp.  Give.  dont spare too long, better make anew.

Useful for cats, children etc...

Good luck!

Her incision looks icky. I don't know if it's really infected but it's definitely bruised. Could be because of the pregnancy, or whatever. It is harder on older females---when I had a stray spayed after her litter (the vet said probably her 10th litter, judging from the state of her insides :/), she didn't even move for 3 days. But she was showing improvement after 4 days so it does seem suspect that the calico is seeming worse at this point. I'd recommend calling the vet tomorrow, see if you can e-mail them the pictures, see what they think.

Emailing them is a great idea! I will definitely call them in the morning and see if I can send them the pictures first. It's a 45 min trip to the office so it would be a lot easier to hear, "it all looks good, stop worrying so much" over the phone, lol. Honestly, though, I think a first thing trip to the vet in the am is going to be necessary. I hope she will be okay tonight...here's to hoping she's just getting bored cooped up in the bathroom...

Both cats are eating, drinking and using the bathroom just fine though! One less thing to worry about :)

So this is the update: we just got out of the vets office with the calico and we should be okay now! The vet said her belly was a little swollen but nothing was torn and she doesn't have a fever. Her incision is infected and that may be why she's a bit swollen. Antibiotics and some rest and she should be good to go! Thanks everyone!
