I know cats are better off eating a wet diet then dry but people are saying dogs should only eat dry I think that's wrong does the wet thing go for dogs also?

I have a 11yr old Dachshund and a 8yr old Dachshund and a 5mo old German Shepherd every time I read info on there breads they say dry only and I feed both wet and dry mostly wet though.

I been wondering this for awhile now.

I know this a cat site and I haven't found a dog site like this one

and I don't know were to post this if its in the wrong spot please let me know.

Thanks.

I do know that dogs don't have the same water issue as cats.. they do drink more.  But a well-balanced diet is the way to go for any animal, including humans!

Raw bones for dogs are a must though...  great for teeth, nutrition and the chewing makes them feel good!

Whole Dog Journal recommends feeding canned food if raw isn't an option. So it all depends which people you listen to :lol3:.

I honestly believe that a balanced diet if the key and I'm an advocate for (small) variety.  I believe the staple should be dry kibble unless other health issues are present, and then with variety of canned, treats, raw, bones and supplements.  I think there is nothing wrong with adding wet into the diet.  But as Mani said dog do drink more than cats and usually aren't quite so prone to UTI and crystals as cats are.

Honestly, feed what YOU feel most comfortable feeding and what is right for your pets.  No food/diet is perfect for EVERY pet across the board.  What is right for one person may not be for yours.  So experiment a bit and see if their systems react badly.  Look for weight gain/loss, shininess of hair, and consistency of stool.

I can only tell you my experience. I have 2 dachshunds and a toy poodle.  They were on a premium grain free kibble.  I switched them to a raw diet after switching the cats because the cats were stealing their food.  It was far easier for me to have everyone on the raw diet.  The dogs are looking much better since the switch.  Their weights have stabilized, their coats are beautiful, and their energy level is much better (although I don't know if that is a good thing....lol).

The dogs were primarily kibble (Nature's Variety).....the cats were all canned at the time of the switch.  I started the cats on raw first, then moved the dogs pretty quickly because the cats were getting into their kibble.  The canned food for the cats (grain free) was costing a fortune.  I'm now feeding the dogs and the cats a raw diet for half what just the cat food was costing me.
