I see a lot of advice about keeping newborn kittens warm, but there's also a lot of warnings about also not keeping them too warm. So what is the ideal temperature?

What should the room temperature be, and should the nest be much warmer? I've got a digital thermometer so I'll be able to keep track of the temperature in the room and in the nest.

Hi Kris78, as far as I know, the temperature in the area where you keep the kittens should be 85-90 F (about 31.5 centigrade) for the first two weeks and about 80 after that.

Actually, if the newborns have their momma there to keep them warm, normal room temps are fine.

If they do NOT have mom then it's not the room itself but the kittens box that must be kept between 95-99 degrees, using a heating pad under the box, but only 1/2-2/3 of the box being warmed, there should ALWAYS be an area where the kitten can scoot onto if they get too warm, otherwise they get dehydrated and die.

If they are cold never feed, their organs are 'on hold' and feeding them will kill them.

Once kittens are 3 weeks old they can now maintain their body temps.
