I called the vet about Whisper's food....she was on the Hills canned food for her kidneys. We had just gone to the vet last Friday to get a case of food for her. And we only used one can, so we have 23 cans of food left. I asked if we could donate the food to another family who has a kitty who is in kidney failure....the food is expensive and it might help the family provide for their cat for awhile.

The vet doesn't do that, but they agreed to buy the food back. Normally they don't even do that; once you buy food and meds, you have to keep them. But we only used one can and we've been long, long, longtime clients.

When I go to pick up Whisper's ashes next week, I'll take the food with me and they said they'd give me a credit toward a vet visit. That will work. BooBoo needs a check-up, so it seems fitting that Whisper's food money will go to help her son's vet visit. (BooBoo and Ms. Pepe are both Whisper's kids from her last litter, 17 years ago.)

When Banshee died, we had just picked up her meds about a week before. I knew that my sister's cat was taking the exact same medication and in the exact same dosage. And we gave Dionne (my niece-kitty) Banshee's meds.

I've been thinking about you and Rick since your post. How are you both doing? I know how difficult it is, but I am thinking about both of you.

We're OK, Lana. Thanks. It's weird putting down seven plates instead of eight. And I think Pepe is starting to re-act now. This morning, I put their food down and she wouldn't eat. She kept walking around, sniffing at BooBoo and looking. But she never ate breakfast. Nor did Bootser. Pepe, BooBoo, and Whisper always ate in the same area.....right in front of the pantry door. Pepe was acting weird. Bootser was just being Bootser.

That's nice of the vet's office. I ended up throwing out Jamie's meds, which is a shame. Pepe has to go through her grieving, too, poor baby.

Thankfully Ms. Pepe ate dinner last night....everybody did, so we're OK here. And they all ate breakfast this morning, too.

Yes, all the cats know where they're supposed to eat and they eat in their places.

The first time the pet sitter came to our house, I had drawn a diagram for her to follow.....Whisper, Ms. Pepe, and BooBoo at the pantry closet, Banshee and Bootser in front of the dishwasher, and Amber Louise at the end of the cabinets by the kitchen door. Well, she didn't follow the diagram and put plates down wherever she felt like it. Nobody ate.....nobody did anything! They all just sat down and stared at her. Finally, her husband said, "You know, I think you'd better follow the diagram, dear!" They started moving the plates around to where they were supposed to be and the cats followed. And everybody ate. The pet sitter didn't think it mattered, but they know! They really do. I don't know what would happen now with Muffin being here because I haven't been away from the house overnight at all since she came (Rick has, but I have not). But when I'm getting their food ready, she sits off to the side, on the floor by the stove....and that's where she eats. And the other cats will follow me to their proper places. (They were a little confused last year when we were remodeling the kitchen.....but we put their plates as close to the normal way as we could and they ate.)

Now that doesn't stop some of them from scarfing off others' plates when they're finished eating. We start out with the cans of food, but I always "decorate" Mollipop's plate with a few dental crunchies as that slows her down a bit. Tabby and BooBoo usually end up eating from the same plate, even though they are at opposite walls of the kitchen; Tabby gobbles down her food and crunchies, then goes over to help Boo finish his meal, so I always give Boo a few extra crunchies as well. As they finish their canned food, I kind of walk around with a handful of crunchies and drop them onto their plates. And now with Muffin, I give her her canned cat food, but after everybody is finished eating and I'm cleaning up from the meal and putting dishes in the dishwasher, I get out her dish of crunchies and she munches from that. She was used to being free-fed, so having the crunchies for her when she wants a snack helps her....even if she only eats two or three crunchies at a time. Muffin has her own dry crunchies; when she came to live with us, I tried to keep things as normal for her as I could. She still eats her Indoor Delights crunchies (everybody else eats Purina Indoor and the Hills dental crunchies) and she still has her Yesterdays News cat litter....of course, everybody uses the litterbox, too, but at least it's still there for her.

Right now, Muffin eats next to the stove, Mollipop and Tabby eat side-by-side by the dishwasher, Bootser eats right in front of the dishwasher, Amber Louise still eats in her spot by the kitchen door, and BooBoo, and Ms. Pepe eat in front of the the pantry door.

It's good they did that. :) I know my vet's office won't take back medication either.

hmm so you saying if i keep putting a certain cat at a certain spot it wont be as hard to keep each other at the plates? and when i put one plate down every ones face is at it of course i let the first one have it and try to hold every one back tell i put down the next plate.

i stand in the kitchen to make sure every one stays at the plates and if one trys to sneak i put them some were else temporary tell the last cat is done.

All I know is that I put two plates on the floor at a time: Mollipop with Tabby, for example, and nobody even tries to eat their food (the girls simply won't allow that). They all wait for their own plate....not patiently by any means; there's a lot of meowing going on. But I put Molli's and Tabby's plates down first. Then Muffin's. Then Bootser (who by this time is screaming bloody murder). Then Amber's plate. And then finally, Boo's and Pepe's plates. They all eat from their own and they don't even try to crowd in on anybody else. I walk around with my handful of kibble and add to a plate as I think it necessary.....tonight Amber, BooBoo and Ms. Pepe needed a little extra, I thought.

Once everybody is finished, though, then they may scrounge from whatever is left on the various plates. And that I don't care about, as long as everybody has eaten his or her fill.

They'll get a snack tonight around 9:00 or so, of dry crunchies (Bootser will get some warmed canned food as she has trouble with crunchies sometimes) and some Sip. And then that's it for the night.

They do like it when I'm home; I swear that Mr. BooBoo of the Bottomless Paws, has a two-hour clock. Every two hours, that boy comes looking for me. He wants his snack. Doesn't matter where I'm at....he finds me and he lets me know in no uncertain terms that it's snack-time. But tonight at dinner, he was sound asleep in the clothes basket in the living room. I walked over and gently shook him awake. And then I put my hands together 3 times and motioned for him to come....he's deaf now and can't hear me say "Lunch!" But he knows that my motion means he'll be eating soon and he's happy with that. He saw me go through the motions with my hands and til I was done, he was heading to the kitchen.

My vet always would take back food especially the unopened cans. I am glad that they will give you a credit. Hope you and Rick (and Pepe :rub:) are doing better tonight. It will take much time to adjust. :hugs: :hugs: :vibes::vibes::vibes:
