I almost hesitate to revive the carrageenan issue, but is the jury still out,

or have we dicided that it should be avoided.

About the EVO, since reading about the potential dangers of carrageenan last year,

I have been just dumping the "solid" food into the mixing bowl

and pouring the "gel" down the drain with hot water.

However, looking at the ingredients,

I wonder if most of the gel is actually chicken broth?

Chicken, Chicken Broth, Turkey, Natural Flavors, Carrageenan, Minerals, Guar Gum, Vitamins, Choline Chloride, Herring Oil, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Sodium, Ascorbate, Taurine, Sunflower Oil, Sodium Phosphate, Beta Carotene

By dumping the gel, am I depriving them of some good flavor, and/or nutrition?

If so, is it still worth it to avoid letting them ingest the carrageenan?

Thanks!

I totally struggled with the carrageenan issue when looking for better canned foods. On one hand, the FDA doesn't have a problem with it. On the other studies have shown that degraded carrageenan causes gastrointestinal inflammation. Some people think that carrageenan is a factor in IBS/IBD and lymphoma in cats. I've decided it's safer to stay away from it, but it's really hard because most cat canned foods have it or some other really objectionable ingredient. It's one of the reasons I decided to switch to raw feeding.

Oops, I think it was USDA. I get those two confused a lot.

With the "3 Entrance Revolving Door" our Government has installed

for the FDA, USDA and Monsanto, it is no wonder you got confused!

Yeah, LOL. I think you're right that the "gel" portion has to have some carrageenan/guar gum for it to be gel-like. But...it's impossible to know how much is in the meat portion. Honestly, in my priority list, I would put high animal protein/low carb ahead of no carrageenan. We can only feed our cats the best we can depending on our budget, lifestyle, etc. Oh, and what they'll eat, let's not forget that one!

I too made the switch to raw after struggling with ingredients in canned food.  If you eliminate carrageenan, there are very few choices available.
