I asked for my tip back!

I went to pick up a few parcels at the post office and stopped and got  2 bags of groceries.

I called a taxi and the driver stood there and watched me put all of my parcels and bags into the trunk, and then took the very last one (the lightest of the bags (bread, lettuce, box of cereal) from my hand just as I was about to put it into the trunk and lowered it the last few inches.

When we got to my apartment, I gave him a $5 tip on a $7 fare.

Then get this; he stood there and watched me unload all of the parcels and all of the bags, and didn't lift a finger to help me.

I asked him for my tip back. He just looked at me and I told him again that I wanted the $5 back, and told him that I don't give tips for just standing around.

Jerk!  

On a happy note,  2 people were coming into my building just as I was packing up my shopping buggy with my bags, and they each grabbed a parcel and bag and helped me up to my apartment with them.

I wouldn't have given him a tip in the first place.

Yep. I'm going to start tipping after the fact.  I'll pay exact fare and if they help me, then I'll give the tip. No more of this before nonsense.
 

Did he give it back? Kudos to you! Maybe he'll think twice about it the next time.

Good for you --- that was a very generous tip.

Was he parked in a loading zone? If so, he should have carried your bags up to your apartment - especially knowing he was getting such a large tip! If he couldn't leave the cab, he should have at least carried them as far as he could. I'm glad he gave you the money back - not much you could do if he refused.

I agree with tipping well for excellent service, and also with not tipping when there's no help.! Some people really shouldn't be in the service industry.

GOOD FOR YOU!!! And you gave me a laugh :lol3: I don't know if I would have been brave enough to do that but completely agree that I would have wanted my tip back.

My building is at the end of a kind of cul-de-sac, so there was no rush for him to move his car.
