I have a 14 month old kitty who has just gone into her first heat. First of all, she is scheduled to get spayed in 2 weeks so we are going to take care of this problem for once and for all. I admit to having putting it off, mainly because our vet (who is terrific) charges $400.00 to do it. Even our local animal shelter charges $250.00 so getting it done in our area is not cheap. I have decided to go ahead and have it done by our own vet however, even though it will cost more.

In the meantime however, she seems so miserable and wound up.  I wish that there were something I could do to make her more comfortable. I have found that she seems to like having me rub her neck and it seems to calm her down some. Is there anything else I can do?

Also, she seems to be eating a lot more food while in heat, about half again (or more) as much as she normally eats. Is this normal for a cat in heat? I guess it makes sense since her little body is so revved up while in heat and I would imagine that her metabolism is higher during that time.

Thanks for any feedback.

If rubbing her neck calms her down, by all means continue doing it.  Some cats in heat respond to having the belly rubbed, but it stimulates some enough that they roll around as if they had been mounted.

I don't know if a Feliway diffuser would help, but it might be worth a try.  Just make sure that she is not able to get out. I am sure you know a cat in heat can almost teleport themselves out.

She probably is eating more because she is sleeping less and like you said, her hormones are all revved up.

The best thing I can tell you is that after spaying, you will never have to go through this again.  Thank you for being responsible in getting her spayed even though it is really expensive. (My vet charges 90-125)  In the long run, you will save money on vet bills and your cat will be happier.

Look at messybeast.com for massage and there it a bit at the bottom on accupressure mating.

I was co-fostering a cat who we could not get in to get spayed for about a month.  She cycled in and out of heat every four days it seemed.  She lost a fair amount of weight.

So, feed her as much food as she will eat/wants.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to come across with. I have also used the spot on the lower belly.   Thank you, OS. I figured you would come up with a good example.
