Hi again everyone,

So Rowan is doing really well still, he's thriving at 5.5 weeks old. He's at 22oz which I believe is on the larger side of a month old kitten. It's 'that time' to start giving him wet food and litter training him! But I am a bit stumped. Are there any tips for how to get him interested in the wet food and interested in the litter box?! Right now he is just so confused about both.

Also, how often should his mom be feeding him per day at this juncture?

Thanks!

P.S. Here he is:

It's harder for an only kitten who is still nursing to be interested in solid foods. They just want mama's milk, LOL. But keep offering it, let his mother eat where he can see her, he should get the hang of it soon. You can smear a little in his mouth to give him the taste. And after he starts on solids his mother won't want to clean up after him any more, so he'll have to figure out the litterbox then. But make sure a small shallow box is available, and don't give him too much room to roam or he'll find his own place to potty!

Also, use a non clumping litter. they small kittens almost always chew a little on the litter, and clumping litter may be dangerous if it gets inside.

IF he has several rooms to roam, best is to have this litter potty pan in every room.   :)

Good luck!

I like using corn husk bits for their first litter experience. People use them for birds and rodents. If he poops on the floor,  place it in the litter box. Show it to him and make sure he smells it. Kittens have instincts to dig and he is more than old enough to get the hang of it quickly.

Take a bit of wet food and put it on the roof of his mouth. Use a lid to a margarine container as a dish at first. They really don't get the "put my head in the bowl" thing right away. If you have to hold it under his nose and as he starts to eat, lower it slowly. Repeat until he gets the hang of it. Some get it right away and others take days...

What really got the kittens to use the litter box was seeing their momma do it. There were 5 of them once, and when they were following their mommy around the house she happened to need to use the litter box.

When they saw what she did they all lined up for using the litter box. I never had a problem with cleaning up after them outside of it.

One didn't dig before/after using the litter box, and I heard from a friend that taking their paw (please note: very gently) and making the digging motion with it in their box would teach them that they need to bury it. I did just that and he did learn to dig. I cannot explain this. It worked though.

Rowan is such a fluffy cutie and bless you for taking care of this little one and his momma!
