My BIL just left. He had an old CD/DVD drive that he used in my computer, so I'm fine again. While we were at it, I bought a new wireless router (yes, that had bitten the dust, too).....a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router and installed that, too. So we are wireless once again. The Nook is connected again and both phones are in the system as well. I hadn't been able to get on the internet with my Nook since the old wireless router died, so now I'm good to go.
Hopefully, that should pretty much be the end of computer woes for awhile.
