My cat is 11 years old she started with chronic constipation a few years ago and just recently diagnosed with mega colon. My cat's name is Noelle. Noelle has been on latulose and cicespride since this problem began and over time has increased in dosage. to three tmes a day. Thus has worked until just recently and hie Noelle spend so much time in and out of her box not being able to move anything. I took her to the vet the last weekend they did an xray and she had a large amount of stool and the colon is twice the size it should be. The vet did an enema advised to continue with her medicine but change her diet to fiber 1 response. Noelle is a fer stubborn cat and will only eat Iams weight control with hairball balll care. I was very surprised when I brought home the fiber 1 and put some down she gobbled it up . She moved her bowels for 3 days afterwards but on the fourth day she had diarreah and the began making frequent trips some times staying in the box for the longer time. I called her vet and she advised me if she does not move Anything by the next day to bring her in for another enema. I feel completely hopeless I don't know what else to do. I am not certain how long she can receive enemas. I was advised if she is not able to move on her own the matenance would be to bring her in regularly for enemas. I am at a complete lost and don't know what else to do.

Hi Rick.  Sorry to hear about Noelle.  Couple of things I don't quite understand.  If she was having diarrhea, why would she need an enema?  Was there a time gap between having diarrhea and when you called the Vet back?  Also, what is this Fiber 1 Response?  Is this a cat food?  I googled it and nothing came up.  That being said, I thought adding extra fiber was not good for cats with megacolon, since they already have issues passing stool, so if fiber bulks up the stool, it would just make it even harder to pass it thru the colon, thus requiring an enema

Anyway, I have never had a cat that was diagnosed with megacolon, however, I HAVE had a cat with chronic constipation, and so I can certainly empathize
.  For my
Sven
, he was on a daily regime of Miralax, which was a lifesaver for us, but mainly for him.  It kept him regular, with nice well formed stools, (always huge though
), but soft enough that he could pass them without really straining.

Just so you know you are not alone, here are some other threads on megacolon.  There are many, many more.  Just search "megacolon" at the top of the page to find them.
