Can someone please help with how to give a cat subq fluids by yourself?  I was trained at the vet's, but my kitty just jumps and runs when I put the needle in at home.. She's not eating the last couple days much and am desperate now.  How do you keep them still to do it alone?  I have no one to help me and hold her.  Thanks!

What helped me the most was to warm the fluids in a sink full of hot water (leaving drip chamber and tubing out, then run air out if line before infusing) and injecting the needle quickly. Slowly putting the needle in drags and hurts!

The vet probably gave you the usual fat harpoon needles that they always use - 18 gauge. If you can track down some Ultra Thin Wall (UTW) Terumo 21 gauge needles, they will be a bit more comfortable going in. Also if you take an ice-cube wrapped in paper towel and gently rub it against the skin where you're going to insert the needle for a minute, it helps numb the area so the poke is less startling. Make sure when you do insert the needle that the bevel side is facing upwards and that you've pulled up the skin taught enough so there isn't much "give" when you poke it through. Be swift and confident. Warm fluids are definitely a good idea, too.

Does your kitty have any favourite treats or like baby food? If so, put some in front of her while you do the fluids and maybe that'll help keep her in place for a bit, plus she'll start to associate fluid therapy with treat-time. If she still tries to run off, maybe you'd have more control over her if she was in a top-loading carrier or box while you gave her fluids, or up on a bathroom counter facing a wall with her bum up against your stomach. You might have to experiment with a few different scenarios before you find something that works.

What's she eating, by the way? Is she on any meds or supplements?

Well, thanks for the advice, but no luck.:(  I warmed up the fluid bag in a bowel of warm water, but I guess it's just the sensation of water under the skin that makes her jump.. I just can't get her to sit still.  Have tried it in various places, on her favorite piano bench cushion, chair cushion, etc.  She wouldn't sit in a box or anything like that. She does not like to be picked up or held/confined in any way, but will sit on my lap when I sit down, so is cuddly that way. They told me at the shelter 10 years ago she's part Abyssinian, very active, a little bit tabby, too - very sweet.  She's 17-18 years old.  When she got the fluids last at the vet, a couple months ago, soon she was hungry as a horse again eating 4 or more 3 ounce cans of food a day, but now suddenly no appetite again.  She gets whatever she wants, Fancy Feast, plus a variety of gluten-free stuff, though that's difficult to find something she likes lately.  She liked By Nature Beef and Liver a lot, but then they changed the formula and put alfalfa meal and flaxseed in it and she won't touch it now!  Thanks a lot By Nature for spoiling that.  Just got an order of Before Grain today Beef and also Chicken.pate. She ate a little bit of that.  Otherwise, I just keep offering her favorites, Fancy Feast pate style and some grilled beef from them, etc.  I try everything, fresh chicken I cook and chop up, etc. She seems very nauseous now, with the head down.  I have been giving her famotidine in Pill Pockets, but the past couple days she won't take that either. Will anything else quell the nausea?

Well, thanks again.  I tried three times today with the fluids and am out of fresh needles now.  I will have to take her to the vet.  My last kitty, Elsa, lived until age 20 and I was hoping Gwen would too.  She's my only baby now and I'd do anything for her.  I will definitely ask for the Ultra Thin Wall Terumo 21 needles when I go to the vet.

P.S.  No, she's not on any meds

Hi,

Check out these links. They were both really helpful to me when learning how to give SQ. I have to wrap my cat in a towel because she growls and moves each time. I sit her on my lap, facing away from me, and keep the towel wrapped with a hair clip and after inserting the needle I hold it and the hair clip with my right hand and keep my left hand on the front part of her throat so that I can restrain her if she tries to move. The smaller needle, I use Terumo 19, hurts less and the warmer fluid, I bought a laser thermometer on Amazon, about 100 degrees lulls her into a sleepy state quickly. Let enough water pass through the line so that the warmer fluid is throughout the line, otherwise her twitching ears will tell you she is cold. Room temperature water is NOT warm enough. Good luck! If I can do it anybody can!
