My 17 year old cat is carrying my husband's socks around the house (moving them from room to room) while crying. Vet has no idea why she is doing this. It is almost like she is carrying a baby around. Has anyone else had this?

mmmm.... Let's see, how long has she been doing this? Can you limit her access her to the socks, at least for a while?

She has been doing this for several years. We have put the socks away and as soon as they are available again she starts in again

Could it be that their just her favorite toy? You say that she is crying, does it sound like she is distressed? If not, I would either let her play with the socks, or keep them away. You could also take one pair of socks and make it into "hers". Maybe even put a bit of catnip inside (only if she's not distressed of course).

If kitty loves loves your hubby's socks only - does she miss him and do this when he is not home?

I don't think she is distressed. The cry is low and plaintive. She only does it with my husband's socks and does it whether he is home or not. She first moved the sock from the back bedroom to our bedroom; now she is bringing it downstairs.
