No kittens yet... Should I be worried?

Hey guys. I've never had a pregnant cat before and I may be overreacting but I don't want to screw up: On February 1st, I took in a stray and took her to the vet, where the vet took an x-ray and said their skeletal systems were just beginning to form. She said the cat would give birth in approx. 20 days. Well, she's waaaaay overdue.  I called the vet and she said not to worry, and to call back if she started bleeding or acting funny. The cat seems fine, and she's HUGE. But I just don't feel right about the while thing. Should I take her to a different vet for another opinion or just do what my vet said? What would you guys do?

The easy to say is to wait, as it is perhaps the most common problem here, the "waiting game".

Do we dare?

It is true, she seems to be overdue. The skeleton is visible day 40-45. Lets say it was day 40.

So +25 to get into day 65, so we have 25 of februari...  We are now over day 70. Not grossly overdue, but overdue yes.

I suppose the kittens are moving a lot?  Has they began to wander down, the tummy getting seemingly smaller?  (when they did wander down, you dont feel them so much) Colostrum?

If you have possiblility to contact another vet too, it is the safest. Begin with phoning for advice.

But avoid x-rays and measuring the temperature in the behind - it is just stressing.

And read on, especielly about late deliveries in cat.

Good luck!

ps.  The other side of the medaljong?   If you dont take any chances and rush her to the vet for a cesarean?  Or for provoking the delivery with hormones.

Especielly  Emergency Vets are often eager to do the surgery.

First. So it is costly, and most people arent made of money.

Second.  If the first vet miscalculated, and it is no exact science, and they are younger than 60 days...

It will be total havoc, as premature kittens usually dont survive.

If your human obstetrician does such a mistake, it doesnt matter very much.  Children born two months too early do survive with just a little extra help.

But more than two-three days too early for kittens is dangerous, often deadly.  EVEN if the owner does hers outmost.

So it is as the renown sailing between Scylla and Charybdis.

Splendid! Beaming! Excellent news! Tx for telling, so we dont need to worry much more.

What are their weight?  Because I hope you do planned to weigh them every day?

On a kitchen scale measuring in grammes is best.

Good luck!

Seven in all. One was still born, sadly, but there's still 6. One little guy seems so be rejected by the mother. She's not licking him of letting him nurse. I have KMR and a bottle, and gave him some of that. Now he's napping with the others. Is there anything else I can do for him?

You want to make sure he is outputting. If mom isn't licking him you will have to wipe him with a warm, wet wash cloth until he gos.

You need to toilet him before and after each feed, and do feed him in the position they feed from mum in - if you feed him on his back the milk goes down the wrong way, and tiny kittens don't have a cough reflex.
