Hi again everyone,

So Rowan is 3 weeks old now and is doing really well. Very healthy and gaining a substantial amount of weight per day. I've read online that you can begin litter training at 3 weeks so I obtained a shallow tray and some non-clumping clay litter. Is it ok to try it with him now, or should I wait? Babalon (his mom) has been eliminating him still.

Thank you,

Scarlet

That is a lovely kitten!  His coloring is interesting!

I know very little about litter training kittens that young.  I am sure that someone who actually has experience will come along shortly.  I would try it though.  Kittens naturally have the instinct to use the litter box, and he will learn by watching his mother.  Stella was about 5-6 weeks old and feral when I got her, but she took to using the litter box instantly with no accidents.  If you start teaching them at a young age I would imagine that it would be much easier than waiting until they start using the bathroom on their own outside of the box.

Provide a very small, very shallow box with non-clumping litter. I like to use cardboard cat food can trays (you can just throw the whole thing away when the pee soaks through to the cardboard). If he were an orphan I'd recommend putting him in the box after naps and meals, but if his mother is raising him she should teach him (you could still put him in if he looks like he has to go). She may lead him to her litterbox but it's best to provide the small one in case he can't get into the larger one.

With the last litter I fostered I had a show tray (fairly small and shallow) and mum's deep hooded tray in the room and I was surprised at how young they wanted to use her tray - as soon as they could get into it.

Agree with the above, mum teaches them.
