When you do your spring cleaning and don't have room for it,do you just donate it,put it in a yard sale, stick it in a garage , or give it to a relative to keep for you ?
Appropriate subject, since I've been Spring Cleaning like a madwoman lately lol! I HATE clutter, so if I haven't used something in a while (doesn't fit, doesn't work for my skin,I don't like it, etc), I will usually give it to a family member. If nobody wants it, I take whatever I'm not using over to Goodwill. As far as clothing goes, once the season is over, I usually organize it into a storage container and either put it under my bed or in the closet until I'll use it again. If I haven't worn something in a long time and I know I won't use it, I donate it.When I'm going through things and trying to make a decision on keep, toss, or store, I try not to take more than a few seconds to think about each item, so I make fast choices and whittle down what I really need, vs clutter I can get rid of.
I always feel a better when everything has its own space and is organized. I also like to go with the "one in, one out" rule as far as magazines and things go. Anytime a new one arrives in the mail, and old ones is given to a family member or recycled.
I will do my spring cleaning in a couple of weeks; Rick will be leaving for Oregon and I will take a couple days off work and rip my way through the house. I will start over the weekend and use those vacation days as well; it will take me four days to get it all done. Laundering curtains; taking down drapes and taking them for drycleaning. All that good stuff. I will wash down our walls, too. (My sister and I have been talking about painting the bedroom while Rick is away....shhhhh, he doesn't know! I don't know if we'll get it done or not.)
I read that you should put what you don't think you need in a box. When the box is full, you seal it and put it away. If you use nothing from that box during the next six months, a year, whatever, you throw it away. I tried that when we did our kitchen over last year....it didn't work for me because I ended up rooting around in my box for more than a few items. Often, and especially where it concerns kitchen items, I may only use something once a year or so.....we have a large 30-cup coffee pot and I use it once a year for very larger gatherings. But it's there when I need it.
We're lucky in that we have a basement, so we can store stuff there.
With a growing kid we always have donate bags/boxes in a corner of the basement. Big Brothers calls every couple of months and they come pick it up. We keep things pretty minimal and don't have a lot of stuff to begin with.
