Anyone familiar with the Outer Banks (North Carolina) for vacations or in general?

DH and I are celebrating our 10th anniversary this year and I'm still trying to decide where is a good place to go for a few days.  It's a little farther than he wanted to drive but a nice, quiet beach vacation sounds great.  My Mom and step-dad are taking time off of work to watch our kids so we only have a few days to go.  We don't want to spend our whole time traveling ya know?

I could use recommendations on everything from what to do to where to stay.  I'll be honest; the whole bed bug thing kind of freaks me out.  And I'm not up for spending a fortune even if it IS a special anniversary.  Usually when DH and I go out for our anniversary we head toward the coast for some seafood and walk the beach here; but I'd like to get away for our get-away.  I'm hoping for good beach walking weather!

I live about an hour-ish away from there.  I have neighbors who have rented houses there for many years now.  Dh even had a co-worker who owned a house.  Though I'm not sure if she still does- she was in remission from breast cancer- and it came back- with a vengance about 6 months ago

June-August are high tourist season- and you're going to pay an arm and a leg for everything- even a hotel.  If you can wait until Sept, the weather's usually a little cooler- and prices aren't so bad.  But then you have to deal with the possibility of hurricanes

Thanks!  I probably should have added; we will be going in May.  DH doesn't have enough seniority at work to get off during the prime vacation season.  So we are actually having to celebrate about a month early.  I'm hoping that means it'll be warm enough to enjoy the outdoors (don't care too much about swimming in the ocean, but I love walking at the edge of the water!) but not sweat to death!

May isn't bad.  I'm not sure about prices.

The water's still kind of chilly to swim in.  It can be warm, but not the obnoxious humidity that we have during the summer.  Though last year, at dd's graduation party- we were all walking around in jeans and sweats and it was almost chilly!  And this was the middle of June!  My sister and I went to the beach with the 4 cousins, and it was kind of too cold to go swimming.  There's pictures I have of us all standing on the beach with towels wrapped around us LOL.

LOL!  Sounds like our weather!  I love the off-season at the beach.  Less people, better temps...just so relaxing to listen to the waves and the birds and walk!

I think I'm going to spend some time exploring their tourism websites and see what I come up with.

When we came home from Myrtle Beach, SC, we came north via the Outer Banks; this was back in 2001 (we were at Myrtle Beach on 9-11), so things have probably changed a lot since then. I remember Ocracoke Island and the ferry ride. There was a little deli-type restaurant on the Island; it was called Cat Ridge Deli or Cafe or something like that, something about cats (Ocracoke has a large feral cat population)....really good sandwiches (I always remember the food!
) Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is on Ocracoke; if you like lighthouses, it's a neat place to visit.

I just booked a hotel tonight!  I definitely want to see the lighthouses!  If I saw right; one you can only get to by ferry and I'm not sure we have time for that.  I only have a few days there.  I guess if we can't get to them all this time; we can always plan a family trip there with the kids in the future.  I'll try to look that restaurant up just in case we make it there!  I found a place that rents kayaks and DH is certain to want to do that!  Me; I'm looking for the food too.  It looks like there are several parks and wildlife preserves we can walk through.  I'm sure to take lots of pictures!  And being the daughter/step-daughter/Air Force Brat & Wife that I am (or was); I have to visit the Wright Brother's memorials.
