Female cat standing on edge of litter box to pee - peeing on self!

My 2 1/2 year old female cat has taken to standing on the edge of the high-sided litter pan when she pees. It's causing her to pee on herself. Sometimes it goes down the back of her legs, sometimes it pools at her feet, it's generally very bothersome as she's tracking cat urine all over the house. She's completely healthy and has no problems urinating and never pees outside of the box. Any suggestions on a solution for this? I obviously need a new kind of litter box but there-in lies the problem: my cats don't take to hooded litter boxes well (they think it's a play pen) any alternative suggestions?

Thanks!

What kind of litter are you using? It could be she doesn't like the feel of what is in her box.

Welcome to TCS and if you have any problems, please send me a PM.

I've changed the litter a few times and she seems to do it no matter what kind I have in there. Currently I have a clumping clay kind (Fresh and Easy store brand) but for a while was using a natural one (World's Best Cat Litter).

She started doing this after I bought an extra high sided litter pan to combat the cats kicking litter all over the floor. But now even when I switch back to a low sided pan she still stands up when she urinates.

Hmm, maybe try a big Sterilite container with the lid off? A lot of TCS members use one as a litter box, both with and without a hole cut in one side. Without a hole would probably work better since there's no ledge to stand on.

in transition...
Maybe she doesn't like being inside a high-sided litter box? Some cats are wary of sneak attacks from other cats when they are doing their business and for that reason dislike hooded boxes. Could be a similar issue.

That is a very good point!

Have you still got the original litter tray?  If so switch back to it and see what happens.

Still have the original tray. It seems that now no matter which box she uses she prefers to stand up when she pees. The issue with the lower one is not only does she continue to stand but both cats kick copious amounts of litter over the sides. (Burying their waste is almost a game, they really enjoy it and sometimes go overboard).
I might try the sterelite container. Has anyone used one WITHOUT the lid? Like cutting a hole in the side so they can jump in but leaving the top off? They had a covered litter box as kittens and took to playing and sleeping inside it even when it was full of waste (despite having tons of boxes and covered beds) and I don't want them taking to that again.

Thank you for all the great input!

Sassy used to do that....she just didn't like being in the box. She'd walk in, turn around and stand at the exit/entrance to the box with her feet on the edge. Pee standing up all over the outside edge, and then make a mess of the litter. I had a high sided  box too.  I went an got her one of those big high sided triangle-shaped corner boxes, and she seemed to prefer that. It didn't stop her standing up, but it kept more litter in the box.....

She doesn't like the litter or doesn't like the box. Is she declawed? Sometimes declawed cats have sensitivity to the clay/scoopable litters. I would recommend Feline Pine, the scoopable, not pellets. It's nice and soft and the odor control is PHENOMENAL. Tad pricy, but it's better than pee pee being tracked through your house and better than her being uncomfortable!

I myself haven't had luck with Jack, who does this only when urinating, not going poo; I have short, shallow boxes, medium boxes, a big sterilite container box, a circular box, some of said boxes being both covered and uncovered. Doesn't seem to make a difference for him. He just seems to enjoy standing on the edge to do his business.

My cats is a rescued declaw . She is 7 and started to stand to pee. I have fine litter and it's been OK until now.
You might want to try putting decrease litter and put one side of the pan litter less. See if that works.

my cat Rosie sometimes stands on edge of her litter box. She's not gotten urine on her but she does get it on the floor! Now she has just started peeing on the floor. I don't know what to do
