Well, I had my post ctscan today. My appt. w/ the ENT was yesterday, and unfortunately, someone at his office forgot to schedule me for the scan prior to the appt! He said that if it still abnormal (and since the foul taste/smell has not gone away), his suggestion was to do surgery, which mine would be minimal surgery. He wants to wait til the results come back, and if it is abnormal, I have to call him. If they are normal, he wants me to do allergy testing. He also said if it does come down to surgery, I could do allergy testing first, to rule allergies out. This type of surgery is done endoscopically (sp?) This ENT I have seen was in one of the months top 5 doctors of arizona.

It sounds like you are in the same boat I was-constant pressure and congestion, drainage and a nasty taste. After 4 months of antibiotics for a (non-existent) sinus infection and allergy testing which showed I was allergic to nothing, I had a CAT scan which showed sinus scarring and buildup, followed by surgery. Although the surgery wasn't the most pleasant thing I've had done (they repaired my deviated septum at the same time), it's been two years since the surgery and I only get sinus pressure when the weather changes drastically and I can take care of that with Sudafed. Surgery may seem a big step, but it can help a whole lot.

The smell and the taste-yes. And I won't lie, my surgery did hurt. But I did have a deviated septum fixed (and the doc told me later they had to do a bit of "reconstruction" to fix it properly), so I think that had a great deal to do with the pain I had afterwards. I took off the week after the surgery, but by the end of that week I was off Percocet and on Advil.

As for insurance-I was lucky, I had good insurance coverage, and since we had tried months of antibiotics and other treatments, it was covered. Perhaps your insurance will cover the surgery after other treatments have been tried. That may be something to look into.

I got my ct scan results today. I spoke to the nurse, and she said there was very marginal change in my scan
So, I meet with her on Wednesday afternoon, and then with my doctor, too, which I am guessing is to discuss the surgery option.
You know what boggles me is what caused this? I wonder if I just one time got a cold and it never went away? Or if it is something I have always had, and it progressed over the years?

Well, in my case it was recurrent sinus infections as a child/teenager. I swam competitively, and sinus infections were (unfortunately) a common occurance.
