IF anyone has read my earlier post ...I have a senior kitty around 18 that has an abscessed tooth....All the vet felt safe giving her was injectable antibiotic..cause of her age ..heart and kidney's....Well I kept soaking it with a warm cloth and yesterday it was draining...I got most of it out without much fusing from her...However today is another story....she seems to be in pain today when I try and touch it...She fights and hides...the good thing is its draining on its own today but its dripping all over the house...So I am just trying to  wipe it before it hits the floor..but clearly she is in pain today...

I'm just wondering if anyone out here has any suggestions for pain control for her ? Something I can mention to the vet that we can try...I have to keep cleaning it til it stops draining but I HATE seeing her hurting so much...

I'm sorry I can't help you with answers, although I'm sure someone will soon, but I'm sending lots of loving vibes to your senior kitty, and to you. Even just the title of your thread shows how much you care for her.

Why not just ring the vet and tell him or her that your cat is clearly in a lot of pain and needs some pain relief?  At 18 quality of life is everything, and being in pain greatly reduces that quality.

Hi again Nance!

YES, to answer the thread's question.

Three, in fact...You can read for yourself here: http://www.felinecrf.org/treatments_antibiotics_painkillers.htm#opiates

My own experiences are with the first two on there.....the first, Buprenorphine, is simply squirted into the side of the mouth every 6-8 hours (NOT swallowed); the second, the patch, is the easiest, no-fuss-no-muss...two possible issues: a small area needs to be shaved for application and, it needs to be replaced every 3-4 days.

Clearly, though, she's "gotta" have some pain relief asap.

Nance - make sure you don't get Metacam

I do have some thoughts for your other thread...I'm sorry to be late in posting them.

Thanks for the replies....I read the link u sent thank you ...But didn't see anything about giving it to a senior cat with  a bad heart and kidney's ..I guess maybe its wishful thinking on my part that she could be givin something that won't do anymore damage to her organs ...The abscess stopped draining last night her face is back to normal ..but  I do have to keep bathing it cause if  the wound closes to soon it will just fill up again...Poor Lucky its always sad when they get older and end up just being in pain before they go :(
