Gandolf was released today around 6pm.  Poor guy, two bloody spots under his eyes and a gash that required a stitch on his forehead. once I opened the trap he took off in a flash.  The other cats are slowly starting to come back today but I saw little Jeff smelling the area where I set the cage down to release Gandolf.  Hopefully in a couple of days all those smells will dissipate so the others don't feel threatened. I think there is one more cat who I"ll need to fix.  He seems completely unaggressive, but now that I fixed two of the males, hope that doesn't change. He's not very regular so hopefully I'll capture him soon. this is pretty tiring, hopefully no more cats show up (hoping for no kittens!)

that is one of the reasons i love my honda element - all plastic floors and waterproof seats. its too bad they don't make the model anymore, i always felt that the element should be "the official vehicle of tnr" :)
:flail: Hilarious!!! The Honda El Stink Proof Feral Shuttle.:clap:
well, not exactly stink proof.

one of the reasons i bought it was that i like to go trail running and when i am done i just chuck my sweaty and muddy and muddy clothes and sneakers in the back. i figured it would be great not having to deal with the carpets getting soiled so quickly. after i had it for a year or so my mother needed to borrow it. after returning it she commented how it smells like an old (very old) gym bag. i guess that all of the sweat/mud/water just emanates and attaches itself to every surface - even though i can basically hose the floor off i cant submerge the entire vehicle :lol3:

once again, good work and it is great to hear that it went......OK? i had one that was similar to him as far as going nuts - mommie. she was going so ballistic that even though the trap was completely covered she thrashed around so hard that the trap was sliding out of the vehicle. funny thing is that now, three years later, mommie pretty much always stays within earshot and any time she sees me she comes running over. it is like she feels safe when she is near me, not safe enough for me to pick her up .....yet?

it is also good that everyone else is coming around again now that the "schoolyard bully" has been dealt with. hopefully now that Gandolf and JC have been altered everyone will start to get into a nice routine as far as feedings go. it certainly will make it easier to trap that last (hopefully) cat if everyone does get into a nice consistent shedule.

Thanks Whaler! Haven't been on in a couple of days due to craziness at work, good stuff but craziness nonetheless.  I have not seen Gandolf since I released him- I believe Wednesday.  My heart sank when I initially saw how much he beat up his little face. But the staff told me he was a super feral. Between him and JC I think Oreo was staying far away that I would see her maybe once every three days.  She came Thursday after I missed her for 3 days and then again yesterday evening and I'm home today painting and I looked out the window and saw her again! I put a whole can of wet food out and she ate it up.  She still looked a little chunky and I know the females can look a little plump after being fixed, but when I initially brought her here with Jeff they were much skinnier, so even if she stayed away for a few days at a time, still looks like she's healthy and she was either flying in and sneaking some food or has another source.  Last night she was eating and JC was just sitting watching her from 20-30 ft away. Oreo is constantly on the lookout so once she saw him she took off and ran.  This is an improvement for JC's behavior b/c in the past he'd either 1) walk right up to her as she was eating(backwards-moonwalk like he did before, lol) or 2) chase after her as she ran away.  She's still scared of him, I guess she doesn't forget? but once she ran away he was just interested in getting some kibbles.  I am going to try to put multiple dishes, but trying to not look so obvious to my neighbors that i'm feeding until I put up a fence.  next door neighbor has a dog and he was literally in my backyard sniffing the cat hangout spot, I'm really p.o'd that they don't have a fence- and 2 dogs! they're sweet dogs but still they'd probably chase after the cats- I know they surely bark at them.  Getting warmer and I should be able to afford a privacy fence soon.  I think the cats might actually hang out then.  I'm trying to figure out if foxes can jump over fences? I know the cats can fit through small openings but hoping foxes will stay out.  All in all, things are looking on the up & up.  once Oreo and jeff start coming together again I can see if I can bring them in.  I think she's at least a little less stressed now.  Oh and that last cat that I thought would need to be fixed- I inspected his ear closely and there is a small tip that was cut off.  He's all gray, looked like a russian blue fluffy cat so it was hard to tell but I got a closeup and the bf said it definitely looks clipped.  maybe he just had a crush on oreo, he'd follow her around from time to time- but she wasn't scared of him.  cat behavior, very complex creatures lol.

i am sure that Gandolf is still a bit freaked out by his experience especially since it has only been a few days. some of mine stayed away for a week or so after the tnr. it is good that JC is around, i bet that given time Oreo will lose any anxiety she has over him - not that they will become best buddies but at least sociable with each other.

foxes are more of a climber not a jumper. i have heard about fox climbing over a 6' fence, but that was fencing that was made of "wire mesh". they are able to use the wire like a ladder, so since your fence will be a solid material you should be fine.

it sounds like you are right that your gray one has been altered already, but you may want to be on the safe side and trap it anyway. are you certain that it is a boy?

haha not sure at all. I always guess they're boys. Oreo looks like a girl because she's smaller, but that would mean she's the only girl in the whole entire bunch.  I saw Gandolf a couple of days in a row, his face looks so much better, still has a stitch on his head but at least no bloody patches under his eyes (that was the really scary part).  Oreo's been coming back a lot. Just before I looked outside saw her little black and white body running off into the woods and opened the door to call her name, she came running back meowing. opened my door to the kitchen and it was like she wanted to come in, put her two little paws inside the kitchen opening and meowed, then backed out again. She's definitely trusting and curious or she wouldn't have even made that attempt. I don't necessarily want to bring them back to the place where I got everyone fixed. It's a really long ride and theres so many dogs there I think the animals get anxious. Wouldn't mind seeing if a local vet can do all the tests for me and vaccines. Probably a lot more money, but want to give this my best shot with them.  I seriously love that little girl and I think once given the chance to be loved it'll all be worth it.  Not going to be an easy ride though.

that is great news that Gandolf is back so quickly - guess he isn't holding a grudge.... or he likes what you serve for dinner :)

that is a really good sign from Oreo - she definitely does have some trust in you.

i agree that it would be a good move to try and use a different vet as it certainly would be much easier on them. are there any cat only vets near you? FIV and FeLV snap tests as well as vaccinations are not very expensive, it may not be that much more - depending on what the "office visit" fee is.

Whaler, yesterday Oreo let me pet her like crazy! scratching her back, right above her tail and behind her ear. she actually went to putty when i scratched her ear.  she purred and continued to eat and then trotted around me on the steps.  at one point she saw my hand in front of her and she went to bite it (very sharp teeth) but she didn't hurt me at all, no broken skin I think she almost didn't realize she was doing it, then swatted me with her paw.  But we continued to have a lot of petting contact after that.  I called one of the local animal hospitals near me that is doing AMAZING work pairing up with rescues and I can tell they really love animals.  I need a new local vet for my indoor cats anyway. The animal hospital is called Grady Animal Hospital in Savyille NY.  I wanted to find a place that loves animals and isn't "in it" to just make a buck.  They said that I could call tomorrow and make an appointment.  I have to capture them on the weekend or a Friday night so that I can have free time to bring them down to the vet.  I also bought feliway from amazon.  Oreo & Jeff have been hanging out a lot now, of course I still get nervous with these foxes.  Do fox eat cats? I know oreo can climb a tree and I'm sure theyre fast but I know fox are fast too.  I hope they just leave each other alone like raccoons and cats.  So glad Oreo & I made a breakthrough. It's so sad how these cats don't know how awesome it is to be pet & loved! I would shower her with affection all the time!

So oreo & jeff were captured a week ago with the help of Gaurdians of Rescue (love them!) we used a drop cage on them both. Jeff was holding out going underneath the cage but oreo was totally trusting. finally just before oreo was done eating jeff went underneath and we pulled the trap down. It was stressful!  Took them to save a pet on LI and they give free checkups, I just had to pay for any vaccines, etc. they're both fiv and leuk negative, no fleas, no earmites. Jeff had one tick which they removed. they got rabies vacc and all other vaccinations (respiratory, distemper) I couldn't find out if they had any worms right then and there, but suspected they would.  I went back a couple of days later with their stool sample and they told me they had hookworm (gross). going today to pick up the meds.  hopefully it'll clear out in their system soon, but I plan on getting their stool tested again in a few days just to be sure.

they are doing extremely well! it's just been a week but oreo comes right up to me when i'm in the room to be pet. she loves the feeling. in fact i was sitting on the couch pretending to sleep and she jumped up right next to me, rubs her head on me and walks around me in circles. i'm just cautious I don't want to get worms lol.  jeff is a little more cautious than oreo but when he hears her purring and squeaking (when i'm petting her) he comes running out and they push each other away to get to my hand. I think as her son he always looks to her for his sense of security. if she's liking it, he thinks he'll like it. oreo gets perturbed by him though b/c he's very needy from her- always headbutting her or getting in her way when I'm petting her. poor baby. he definitely wants attention but she gets a little moody with him, growling at him and then smacking him or clamping her teeth on his tail. I think this is just her signal to leave her alone. lol. I hope they'll get along with my 2 inside cats (both are sweethearts) but oreo will be the only girl with 3 boys. i think she just wants to chill and hopefully the boys will leave her be. :) once they're parasite free, i'll take the next step and incorporate them into the household.

:clap::clap: :woohoo: WONDERFUL UPDATE!!! Great, great job, hun. AND, they sound so very sweet. Don't worry, it is highly unlikely that you will get the hookworms, hun. I have those disposable gloves on hand and if a cat has a parasite I will just use the gloves when I clean the boxes. Just keep your hands washed if you are worried. But you can't get the worms from petting them and that was a good thing to mention. Not to worry. Keep those litter boxes dumped and scrubbed once a week until their stools are negative. Make sure to get the stools tested before you let them associate and meet with your other two cats. Keeping them in their safe room is not cruel, not at all. It is the best place for them right now anyway while they learn to trust you and settle into their new territory. Don't rush along with the introductions. Take your time and make sure Oreo and Jeff are completely healthy first. Again, super job and so relieved to hear this great news. :hugs: :vibes::vibes::vibes: for continued good reports. :D

Thank you Feralvr!! I gave them the meds monday and jeff only ate half of his food with the meds in it (it was so little to begin with, but he kept trying to eat from oreo's bowl so i had to push him away- 2 bowls and they both try to stick their heads into one tiny bowl!) but then i gave him the rest of the medicated food yesterday.  Garage is a little messy up against the wall, but that is actually their "safe hiding" place when I open the loud garage door. Here is Jeff, looking very statuesque. and oreo curling up next to me, on the very comfy couch that I couldn't fit in my home front door lol. My parents gave it to me and I didn't want to throw it out. it's like brand new leather so I threw a comfy comforter on top so they wouldn't scratch it- so far so good.  they are both opening up immensely. they love to be touched, scratched and when jeff wants in, he and oreo push each other out of the way to get to my hand lol.  Today i was sitting on the couch. oreo walked into my lap and was rolling around in euphoria as I was petting her- she was upside down in my lap head hanging over my legs. jeff was curious so jumped up next to me. both purring.  i don't like to overwhelm them, but i try to go in- in the morning before work at like 8am and then again at 7 when I get home.  i was told they have to get the 2nd dose of drontal in 2 weeks to make sure they're clear. after that I will introduce them to my 2 indoors. so all in all, they'll have been in the garage for about 5-6 wks. i feel sad for them b/c they don't have a window. oreo goes to the corner of the garage where there is a small hole (nothing big enough for them to get through) and she listens and sits there at times. but they don't seem depressed or anything like that. if they saw windows right away they'd probably go nuts trying to get out. when jeff was a baby i tried bringing him in. I had a florida room in that house and he ran himself into the windows. it was horrible. hoping for continued success in their transition. jeff is the same age as my geppetto and they're both very playful. hopefully they can be best friends. oreo seems annoyed with jeff at times (even though he's her son) b/c he tries to take attn away from her when i'm petting her he runs over. i've seen her several times growl at him and bite his ear. nothing super vicious- but more of a warning to leave her be. i think she is loving the attention.
