My dear sister Linda's family has had a toy poodle named Dollie for many years; she is a family dog but really adopted my sister as her main person. Dollie would not leave Linda's side for the almost two years as she battled melanoma. Linda was an animal-whisperer (among other amazing talents) and she always knew what Dollie was saying to her, and there is no doubt in anyone's mind that Dollie understands English!
After my sister passed away Sept. 2011, Dollie attached herself to my sister's husband and they have been constant companions since. In fact, Dollie gets very anxious if my BIL is not in sight and she spends 90% of her time on his lap.
Dollie was diagnosed with lymphoma a couple of weeks after my sister died. As you can guess, it's been a really difficult time for my BIL and his family.
I received news last night that Dollie is no longer eating, so her time to join Linda is drawing near. Dollie is such a sweetie, she loves the outside feral cats that my sister and her family had neutered and take care of (the cats love her, too, and give her head-butts). We always joked that Dollie is part cat, part human, and part dog.
She's always loved getting groomed and showing off her new ear-ribbons. She'd keep bugging you until you examined them and told her they look nice.
