Correct Lysine dosage for a 2 week old kitten?

Hi all,

It was suggested that I make a new thread to discuss what the title says - what would be the proper daily lysine dosage for a 2 week old kitten? He's 12oz and is very healthy aside from the occasional sneeze which of course could be nothing but I'd like to prevent any URIs. 

I read that 250mg/day is about right. 

Any info would be appreciated, thanks!!!  

You really need to ask your vet this question. I wouldn't give a cat lysine unless it was advised by the vet to do so.

You're right, except the vets in my area don't really know what they are talking about. Almost every time I have asked them a kitten-related question they have not been helpful. Now, as I understand Lysine is an amino acid so it is generally considered safe. Does anyone know anymore about it?

It is an amino acid that is found naturally in food. It can be purchased at health food stores and pharmacies and some vet's offices as well as amazon.com. You don't need a prescription. Lots of people here use it. You can search this site (up top) to read more about it.

In cats the herpes virus is a common cause of URI's with sneezing and crusty eye symptoms. L-lysine makes it hard for the virus to replicate and a lot of times can stop the symptoms from progressing into a URI. I have been using it for my cats for almost 2 years after my vet recommended it. One of my cats had constant URI's at the shelter, now he never has any. I just don't know what dosage because mine are older. Call a different vet and ask?
