I was just wondering what is a full urinalysis with bladder ultrasound?

Is it necessary for an indoor kitten to have one?

Also, is a 6 month supply of Revolution necessary? She does not have fleas. She is the only cat in the household, no other pets.

I am just wondering because my vet suggested to me a 12 month payment plan for my kitten which includes multiple things such as her vaccines, spay, microchip, deworming etc.

I am interested in the payment plan however I am wondering if all of the things are absolutely necessary for her??? I don't want to pay more than what I have to....

Thanks!

A full urinalysis with ultrasound for a healthy indoor kitten is not necessary. If she came with fleas she may need a couple of flea treatments, but not indefinitely.

Any vet that starts pushing a bunch of expensive unnecessary procedures and "packages" is a vet to be avoided.

Find a different vet, a different practice, is my advice.

I wonder if you are going to one of those chain store vets. Sounds like bad news to me.

I agree.  Revolution can be used for deworming (kills certain worms) too, so maybe I could see three months at the most....just to zap any possible fleas or parasites (kills earmites too.)  (We did three months when we adopted a cat who showed signs of parasite problems, even though she would be indoors only.)   Some vets treat kittens routinely for these things without testing for them, some don't.  BUT, 6 months of Revolution when you told them (I assume) that she is indoors only?  That's crazy.  And the urinalysis is not a routine thing....usually done, I believe, if a urinary problem is suspected.

I would just like to second that opinion!  Also, in my opinion, there is no way they need flea treatment if there are no fleas and she doesn't go outside.  That is just (again, in my opinion) another way vets get more income.

I have two grown adult cats who have never had an ultrasound with their urinalysis.  Ultrasounds are not cheap, I doubt they've very pleasant for the cat, and I don't see any reason any vet should suggest one if there isn't some kind of problem.

Thanks for the advice. She is going to the vet tomorrow for her 2nd set of shots, and I will most likely tell them I will use the plan ONLY if they can exclude the urinalysis and revolution from it.... everything else in the plan are things I was going to have done anyways, and with the plan they offer a 10% discount.

I don't plan on changing vets, they are very friendly and close by. It is my local vet, not a chain.... They are located within a 5minute drive from me which is extremely convenient, and the next vet near by is 30 minutes away.

Read the fine print very carefully especially on her spay "package". Sometime these "packages" include de-clawing.

I've read stories from horrified people who discovered their kitten's toes had been cut off along with the spay/neuter, and they never even knew they'd signed the papers agreeing to it, because they never read the papers.

That sounds terrible! I will not have her declawed and I have already told my vet this, in fact the doctor told me he did not suggest the procedure as it is very painful and not necessary. I am glad to know he is against declawing himself.

I will keep this in mind though when she does get spayed to ask them about the declawing to make sure it does not happen!!

Yay, so glad to know your vet is anti-declaw. I wouldn't worry then, since you have already discussed it with him. Sounds like you are really pro-active in your kitten's health and care and know how to ask questions and stand your ground!

Actually, my vet has a program also where you get a discount, but it's not a "package," just if you take them in for their checkups, you get discounts on everything.  Not just the check up, but all vet visits, supplies, etc.  So I guess that's not unusual.  But I still don't know about the untrasound thing, I guess I'd need to know more about why he is recommending it.
