To my surprise, I was let go today.  It came out of nowhere!  No notice!  (April 4th would have been 2 yrs there).

My manager said that the owners decided to "go in another direction."

They had already gotten rid of the woman who worked for them in Greensboro (doing all our marketing), taking it on themselves.

(They own the Greensboro, Raleigh, & Wilmington locations).

I was the office manager.  They wanted someone to do more "web stuff," & the home shows. They even already hired someone!

Tomorrow is pay day, & one good thing, my manager said that they agreed to also pay me the next pay check as well, in two weeks,

so that at least is a blessing. I am also going to ask if I get any vacation days, sense they started over at the beginning of the year. That would be 5 extra days.

My manager is a really sweet guy. He tried to save it for me, by letting them know that I had talked to him a couple of weeks ago,

about starting to take on more by doing the ordering, to make more money.

He told me that he & his wife had been praying for me sense he found out he was going to have to let me go, & was hoping that an opportunity would have come along before he had to do it.

He said if I needed a reference letter, or anything, he would be glad to do that.

I of course was upset, & shed a few tears when he told me, but I am really surprised that I have actually been okay this afternoon.

(I came home & did some laundry & cleaned!)

I think/ hope that , that means something better is coming for me soon. I really hope so,  Uh! the thought of dealing w/ unemployment again!!!  AND, sense I will be getting another pay check, I'm pretty sure I won't even be able to file until after I get it.

I will be making some phone calls tomorrow.

Please keep me in your prayers!

I'm so sorry.  I was laid off once from a job I worked really hard at.  I knew it might happen because it wasn't generating the revenu for the company they needed (nothing to be done; this was not too long before the recession started, maybe a year or two, but I saw the signs before it did) so it was as simple as that.  It still was rough.  I was actually laid off the morning I got back from vacation.

I hope something new and better comes along for you soon!!

I'm not sure about there, but here you can apply for unemployment as soon as you stop working, but you won't get any money for 4 weeks after the last pay. 2 weeks unpaid and then you wait 2 weeks to get your first payment.

I know where you're coming from! I was just laid off after my company closed 266 locations across the country. Here in Washington State at least you can file as soon as you find out you're losing your job ( for example they told us two weeks ahead of time so I filed two weeks before my actual last day) But, you don't actually receive a check until two weeks after your last paycheck. Hope that helps!

Sorry you lost your job :(

Take that guy up on his offer for a reference.  Get him to put the reference in writing on their letterhead.  This way you will always have it. You can make photocopies and give to each potential employer if they ask for a reference.   They can then phone to confirm the reference. Many won't so long as it is in writing.

Thanks for all the support you guys!!    Yes, I called to file for unemployment this morning. It's all automated now.  That took 40 minutes. Then in order to complete it, I need to speak to someone, so have been on hold sense. It's been another 40 minutes as of now. I just finally put the phone on speaker & sat it down, so I can get somethings done, but at this point, I am wondering if I'm ever going to get through. I'm afraid to hang up, as it may mess up everything I just did!

I will have the manager write that letter.  Yes, on their letterhead is a good idea. Thanks!

I just texted him to see if I had any vacation owed to me, sense every little bit will help. Unfortunately I don't sense the 2nd year wouldn't be January, but from my start date, April 4th, 2011, to bad

I just missed it by a little over a month. That would have been 10 days this year!  ARRRRR!!!!!!!

............still holding, almost an hour now.
   IT'S RINGING!!!!!

About the time you hang up, someone will answer the phone.  Unfortunately, the system counts on at least 50% of people giving up and never calling back.

Finally got through!!  Will have to get more info before I can file. I have to confirm/ find out what my last check will be. Then, can go from there. (If they do give me that last ck, on the 7th,  as "separation pay" the unemployment lady called it).

Add in the "waiting week," & I probably won't get a check until maybe mid March??

"I hate going through all of this!"  Such a pain in the butt!!!

That doesn't sound right.  You would have had 1 year vacation from April 4, 2011 to April 4, 2012.

From April 4, 2012 to now, you should still be entitled to a prorated amount of vacation. If not 10 days, then pretty close to that, 8 or so I would think.

Check with the Labour Board in your area.

Thanks Natalie, but I'm not sure about that. Last year, I used up my 5 days by dividing them in half. I took half in August for my Birthday, & then the other half during Christmas. So that was last year.

My second year Annv. there wouldn't have been until April 4th, so I hadn't been there two yrs yet, so, I don't get the days. (which would have been 10).

Would've been nice though. I guess I should be glad that they are giving me a next pay check.

When did you start working there?

If you started working there in April 4, 2011, your 1 year anniversary is April 4, 2012.  You were entitled to 10 days vacation, which you could take between April 4, 2011 and April 4, 2012.

Now between April 4, 2012 and April 4 2013, you would be entitled to another 10 days vacation, which you would take between April 4, 2012 and April 4, 2013.

However since you are not going to reach your 2nd year anniversary, you won't get a full 10 days, but you are entitled to vacation pay from April 4, 2012 until the day he fired you.

Just because you lose your job doesn't mean you lose all of the accumulated vacation you had coming to you.

You fight for every dime coming to you!  You are entitled be paid for the vacation you earned but have yet to take.

So far as being glad that they are giving you another pay cheque, don't be, it's the law.  They aren't doing it out of kindness.  They either have to give you 2 weeks notice to let you go, or 2 weeks pay in lieu of the notice. They are giving it to you in in lieu of the notice.

So after you worked 1 full year, you got 5 days, which you already took, You said you divided those 5 days into 2 instead of taking it all at once.

Basically when you take holidays it is based on the previous months worked.  So you have banked/accumulated more days off since April 4, 2012....10 days according to you if you were to work until April 4, 2013.

If they won't pay you for the 8 or 9 days that you have accumulated, you take them to the labour board.  That is money you are entitled to, because you won't be there to take the days off.
