TCS is as far as I will go into the internet world. I refuse to FB (or any of those other what-ya-ma-call-it sites) for more reasons than one. Part of me is resisting all of this technology but I know it is the wave of the future and how many people communicate now.
I totally agree with you.  There are too many people out there trying to scam or hurt you.  Too many take anonymous to mean license to do anything.

Did something happen recently here at TCS?   Was I asleep dreaming of feral cats and missed the whole thing?

That must have been before my time.....I don't remember it. Good grief.
This was back in 2007 or 2008. I remember it, but I'm sure the posts have been removed. It was heart wrenching. The father wanted donations for clothes and baby formula...it was a mess.

This site, I would say, is fairly safe. I am hesitant to post on a frantic post, unless it's just asking for advice or support, not donations.

Just be careful. I am on FB, but only to play the games and keep up with my friends. I don't start my own posts very much, and there aren't many posts on my page. And my privacy setting is to "friends" which are the people I allow to friend me. There are a lot of sites I wouldn't go to, including WoW and other online gaming sites. It just takes common sense and a sense of adventure, in equal proportions.

Yes, it happens everywhere on the Internet. Some people are very good at it and can spin a very convincing tale that will sway even the most suspicious person.
And others get so caught up in contradictions that you have to wonder whether they're so naive that they truly believe they're putting one over on people. Being able to predict what twists and turns their fairy tales will take next sometimes even makes their hogwash worth an occasional read, even if you're not a fiction/fantasy fan.

Wow, I had heard references to some big fraudulent thing that happened here, but I couldn't imagine what it might be. What depths people will sink to in order to get attention; and from people that they'll never even meet in real life. What an empty way of living.

I have to wonder the same thing as Bastfriend... did something happen recently? I'm no teenager, but I don't foray into the social networks sites and so I'm pretty innocent about trolling and all. I tend to trust that what people say here is truthful, and I try to see things from their perspective. Maybe I should be more cautious...

I agree that it's sad that people can be so lying and manipulative on the internet.  I guess it is one thing and doesn't hurt anyone when someone comes on saying "I live in a big house in a fancy city with my fancy-bred cats and honor student kids", but it does ruin the experience once folks get wise to it.  It's another thing entirely to lie about your credentials and achievements if you are offering advice as a trainer (seen it on dog/horse sites), scam people out of cash, and drastically misrepresent yourself in an online relationship through trust and sob stories.  Years ago on one forum that I viewed occasionally they had an incident where three big-time members created an account and used information that they had earned from months/years of communication to write a very mean and awful post about many of the other members.  These weren't random newcomers to the forum either; They were well respected members who had thousands of posts, were well-respected, and with whom people had likely conducted sales with.  Goes to show that even those who you think you know can mislead you terribly.

A former roommate that I had has met a few people online, and I've gone with her to public places to meet these guys.  She never ended up hitting it off with any of them, but I ended up becoming close friends with one of them.  There are good people out there, but in general I don't think that it's worth taking a gamble with your safety.

I'm one of those who only adds people that I know on facebook.  The only exceptions are three people that I know from a dog forum, but I have since removed one of them because her political post irritated me one day and I rarely visit that forum anymore.  The other exceptions are people that I know of through other people and have seen around campus and such, but with whom I have not been formally introduced.

The internet is mobile and a constant companion for them - they access it with their DS's, cell phones, iPods, iPads... they can also get online with TVs and gaming consoles. When daughter brings new friends over, first thing they ask is for our wifi password.
I should have said it better I meant when computers became a household item in 90's.  But your right now it is so much more and so many ways for kids to get around restrictions parents put in place.

Why is it that so many of the internet scams for money involve someone in Nigeria?  A lot of them seem to involve a scheme to send money to get a large amount of money back.  I have to wonder how naive or desperate some people are to fall for these scams.

Ooh, I read about that once. The simple answer is that Nigeria is a pretty lawless nation and the police are overwhelmed with more serious crimes. Cyber criminals are basically given a free pass, and so they can turn their scams into a full-time job.

Back in 2000 when I got my first computer, I was in MSN Chat rooms a great deal.  There were so many fakes. One that stands out is a girl who claimed to be from New York. She said she was single, blonde, blue eyed, and worked in a law firm.  One guy I had gotten to know though the chat room said that was nowhere near where she lived or what her life was like.  He worked as a police officer and knew her because they apparently lived in the same city.  She was black, with 3 or 4  kids, didn't finish high school and was a stay at home Mom.  She was horrified that I had struck up a conversation with the guy because she knew that her fake personna would be ultimately revealed.

And then there was the computer game I was involved in.  The game characters are male or female, and a large number of males played female characters because the female characters tended to be treated more kindly in the game.  My best friend in the game was a guy who was playing a female character when I met him, and it was he who explained why many guys did that.  And some carry that personna off line.
I play MMO Games. One of the biggest MMOs out there as of now. In the game they always say a GIRL in the game is usually always  Guy In Real Life. When people hear me talk in vent they are always shocked that I am a real woman. I was shocked when I found out guys played girl chars.

I used to play Ultima Online. I also had the same reaction when people realized that I was really a girl,  lol
