My cat is having her first litter right now. I'm totally clueless to this process. So not like humans or birds. Right now she has two and it's been over two hours and she has only two kittens. She's in the bathroom with the door closed since I have another cat and a dog I want her safe. She's not caring for the two that are born, does that mean she's still going to have more? the first one she ran out from where she started having it and ran around the house until it fell off. She wouldn't come back for it. I took a clean towel and picked it up and put it in a basket then placed the towel in with the momma once we were able to get the momma inside the safe room.

What should I do? I really need some advice. Thanks.

What you should do is to proceed with what you are doing! Being there, keeping close watch, being ready to help out...  It is one of these cases.    That going on is not unusual, but not what it is supposed to be in  care free deliveries.

Try to held the kittens dry and warm, at least.  Hopefully, her maternal instincts will kick in soon.

I guess she is quite young??

She may have more inside, but probably also the instincts had not kicked in yet...

So you must prepare to give them food, etc...  If in emergency, you are their only chance, if she doesnt do it.

Or does she began to care for them?

Keep reporting!

Good luck!

If the cord is still there attached to placenta or even mom, you can yourself cut if off with your nails. (NOT scissors). Sever it as long from the kitten as possible.

Dry them with a towel, also massaging them, and keep them warm... So you will buy them some time till the moms maternal instincts hopefully kicks in.

As you already do.

Make sure she doesn't lay on them or God forbid try to hurt them. I've had that happen with foster mommies before.) Also, keep an eye out for a stomach that stays swollen and painful after 3 days (possible hernia or retained placenta can make her feel sick.)

And remember she can get pregnant again very soon after having kittens.  Keep her in until she is spayed and check with your vet how soon after delivery he is willing to do this.

Lots more advice about birth at this URL:  http://www.fabcats.org/breeders/infosheets/breeding_from_your_cat/felineparturition.html

Also get hold of a set of cheap digital scales that weigh in grams - cheap kitchen scales for example.  Weigh each kitten once a day at about the same time and record the results.  They should each gain at least 10g most days.  Failing to gain for more than one day is a sign the kitten is having problems - if they are all failing to gain the problem may well be with the mother.

Why grams?  if you weigh in ounces you will have to deal with decimal points and 10 is far easier to remember than .35 (equivalent in ounces).  I put my results into a spreadsheet as it's far better at arithmetic than I am.
