Abscess in the mouth? Holistic Treatment option?

My cat regularly gets a swollen lip.  Normally if he eats a bug this will happen.  Right now, he has a puffy stinky area (where the whiskers are) and I looked under his lip and I can see where it is in there, it looks like a sore or something.  Is there anything I can do to treat it holistically? I prefer a holistic treatment over an antibiotic if there is one.

I'm bumping this up for those who treat holistically, in case they missed this one.

But in the  meantime, what do you normally do when this happens?

I would take my cat to the vets if they had anything like this.  What abcesses need is draining and antibiotics.  In the mouth might indicate a dental problem as well, or there might be a foreign body causing the problem.

I have no idea, but if that was my mouth I'd be round to the doctor ASAP, and the vets if it was one of my cats.

I'm using a turmeric salve on my cat's sebaceous cyst..   It's anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory.  Something like that could be useful for the ones that come and go, if you have it available in your area.

But I really agree with OS on this one... I treat myself holistically when possible, but thank heavens for antibiotics when something gets out of hand.  I'd be the same with my cats.  It sounds to me like an infection that could easily go systemic, especially if it smells, and these things can progress really quickly..

I just wanted to update.  My herbalist friend tole me to give him this homeopathic pellet, I can't remember the name right off, and manuka honey.  I didn't have any at the time, so I put raw honey on it.  After just 1 day, the fish smell was nearly gone.  The smell is totally gone now and the swelling is going down.

I am leary of giving him antibiotics since we're still not 100% sure if what threw him into that horrible long 3 month episode of him being sick was partially due to an antibiotic he was on or if it was just him drinking paint water.  I want to avoid it as much as possible just in case it throws him back into being sick. I don't want to deal with that again. poor guy. :(

I often wonder if he does have something like FIV just because he seems to get infected with something all the time.  Hopefully keeping manuka honey handy will help get rid of anything before it fully flares up.

:vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: for your kitty. I am all for holistic treatment of pets. It has done wonders for my ailing senior dog. I just want to say that I do think some things have to be treated western especially if it involved a cats mouth and a serious abcess or infection. I do know that pure raw honey will work for soothing sores in the mouth and inflammed gums (gingivitis) in cats. If this is something more involved with a tooth and is a possible deep seeded infection (you mentioned a fishy smell) then I would not wait for vet intervention. I know you mention that you are worried but in all honesty, I think the longer you wait the more serious, not to mention painful, this problem will become. It sounds to me like an infection that has been brewing for sometime now. Keep us posted. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

I realize I'm late to the party, but I noticed my cat has a swollen lower lip.  She was having an issue with fleas (I just moved - she's never had them ever!) and I think she's allergic to the bites.  I'm trying the manuka honey, but is there a homeopathic treatment?  I'm using diatomaceous earth for the flea issue (my dog, I think, brought them into the house from a dog park visit - she's never had them either).
