I signed up for a cake decorating class!

My Mom was great at decorating cakes. While I inherited her talent for baking, the decorating escapes me. I start a four week course on March 18. It is also part of my plan to get out of my rut of working and going home and doing nothing but watching TV.

Over the river and through the woods...
I've always wanted to learn how to decorate. My mom was "decent" at it, not professional quality or anything but she always made fun cakes for my birthday. I have her decorating kit and don't  have a clue what to do with it. Good luck! And share tips and pics of your progress!

My sister in law works at Krogers and she used to make cakes in the bakery and she is a cashier at the U-SCAN but will do cakes if she was asked too.

Have fun Natalie!!  Take pictures, so we can see!
My mom took a class years ago. Once & a while she made extra money doing wedding cakes, birthday cakes etc... for people!  She rarely does them anymore, it got to be a lot of work, but once & a while she will do one for someone.

OH, I just thought of another idea for you, or anyone reading this.  She used to save the large tuna cans & bake little personal birthday cakes for people  in them. They were perfect size!  She was a teacher's assistant, so mostly she did it for the other teachers at school.

Please take pictures.....I'd really love to see them. This is something I've been wanting to do for several years now, but can't seem to get the courage to sign up when they have the classes locally.

There is no need to have courage. The purpose behind taking the classes is so that you can learn.  I signed up at Michael's Crafts. There are 4 levels. I signed up for level 1 (The Basics).  And while I have several cake decorating kits with all kinds of tips, I had to buy another one because I needed the decorating templates so that I can trace along lines.

The course is $45.00, and the decorating kit for course 1, that contains all of the tools for all of the 4 levels (templates vary between the kits), was 40% off and cost me $30.00 with taxes.  So basically $75.00 for 4 weeks.

You should sign up!

I have an idea!  Why don't you sign up and do a course when I'm doing mine?  We can share photos, and tips. Even though we aren't in the same city, we could still do a cake decorating course together :)

I plan on doing Level 2 at some point too.  That's when they cover making flowers.  Level 3 and 4 are fondant and things like that. Not really sure I'm interested in that. But I'll see how the first 2 levels go.

I would love to do that....and there is a Michael's in the area now. Unfortunately, we're saving for the kitchen floor and backsplash, so money is really tight right now. I will live vicariously through you! Please make sure you show pictures! Sometimes our local mall will do a College of Knowledge and cake decorating basics is always included. I was always tempted to sign up, but never did.

My mom gave me a 100-piece Wilton decorating set, including a VCR (years ago) and I did practice quite a bit on the practice board that came with the set. Flowers elude me, pretty flowers, that is. I can do leaves OK. Roses? So not good with roses.

They cover roses in the second level.  The 3rd and 4th levels are for fondant and using the icing gum to create flowers and other types of designs.  I'm not really interested in fondant or sculpting flowers from "gum".  So level 1 and 2 is all I'm seeking, at least for now.

They have other classes there too. Two others that I'm interested in is the one for jewelery and the other is acrylic painting. They also have a crochet course. But I know how to crochet, I just don't know how to read a pattern. And I don't want to sit through however many weeks, just to learn that. I figure one day I'll look it up on YouTube. They have everything there, lol

I don't think we have Krogers in Canada. But I have bought one from Safeway less than a month ago and it cost me $30!!!  Which is a big reason behind my wanting to take this course. A cake mix and some icing and I can have a pretty birthday cake for under $10.00.

I'm not really into fondant either.....I did some fondant work on a Christmas cake a few years ago, but I don't really care for it. I'd just be interested in the first and second levels.

No Krogers around here either. Usually when we want a cake for a special event, we call Country Cupboard...a large restaurant, country store type company here. They do beautiful work, but yes, their cakes are pricey, too.

I ordered a two-layer coconut cake from Country Cupboard with extra coconut (enough for about 20 people with nice-sized slices) and a lemon filling; the bill was $26.00. And worth every penny, IMO. I can do layer cakes and I've finally gotten the knack of frosting layer cakes (took me awhile), but at Christmas time, I had no extra time to be messing with a white coconut cake as we were finishing up the kitchen redo.....and that's our traditional Christmas dinner dessert.
