cassie gave birth to six kittens 3 days ago. today shes out here sitting by me and licking herself and she gets a chunk of fur that just comes out and she spits it back out and leaves the area. ive noticed these patches of hair laying around the house-about 2-3 times now. but it wasnt until now that i saw how it was happening. (the other times were before she gave birth).
shes got black and white fur. the black is a soft gray underneth. anyways, these patches have this powdery soft like white stuff at the roots and its a cm or less from the root.
is this normal?
i also feed her science diet kitten chow along with her favorite whiskas cat chow(she has her pick and will munch on the whiskas more than the science diet). i also give her a cat multivitmin that i got from walmart. ive been giving her 1 and a half tabs since yesterday because of her bleeding and pale colored nose (vet said it couldnt hurt-but this is also the same vet who said she was just fat and that cats dont get pregnant during the winter time).
otherwise she seems healthy (besides the awful gas she has gained just since the birth of her kittens). all of the kittens seem healthy and no hair problems.

Sorry for not giving you any answer earlier. I was hoping somebody else would do it - as I dont have clear cut answers...   Although some ideas did come running as I did wrote on.   :)

Normally, what you ask is all questions you should talk over with your vet.  Your problem is you dont really trust him and his knowledge...

Discuss them with him anyway.  Or find some other vet.

How is it going??

This loss of hairs isnt really normal. There may surely be some different reasons, but none of it is the everyday matter of course...   One theory may be she has had too little nourishment. Lets hope. So the multivitamin should help here if this is it. Cant hurt.

Try also with some other good wet food other than this whiskas...

If you dont have problems with salomonella in eggs in your country, have also raw egg yolk into her wet food.  Or egg yolk with goat milk, if you can get goat milk...   Good nourishments both.

Her having gases.  Had you dewormed her before? Does she still have gases?  Eating many placentas may get her bowels going runny. They can even get diarrhea.  My theory is, she almost got diarrhea, not for real but got gases...

But it should be OK now, if it were the placentas...

Good luck!

thanks :-)
since the post, i was scared due to all the kittens and momma coming down with the runny noses and coughing and sneezing. i called and they told me the only way they would see them is for the feline office visit times 7 (momma and 6 kittens). im in search for a new vet, but since that night they all are better (one still sneezes and coughs and has a breathing problem but i think it may be due to a more birth defect like a palate or something in the mouth).
but cassies hairloss is much better. i keep on giving her vitimins too. i stopped the whiskas too.
shes had her shots, dewormed, defleaed, checked for microchip, and checked for fiv. that was the first week i took her in. (along with the antibiotic 2 week shot that she got back to back for a upper respitory/asthma problem going on.)
as for gas, she still has a bad one here and there, but it has gotten much better.

thanks :-)

I have seen the hair loss after birth in a dog several years ago. Remember that animals have emotions just like we do. A combination of giving birth, and then promptly getting sick, along with her babies and her momma (you) also being sick could stress her out to the point that she would have hair loss or even pick at her own hair to make her feel better, a nervous tic maybe. Kind of like human PMD.

It could also be Malnourishment, giving birth and feeding that many kittens can take its toll on her, especially if she's being picky with her food. Keep on with the vitamin. Just keep a good watch on her, make sure that she isn't bleeding from any of the places she's pulling the fur. you could also try giving her a good comb out, if she's a very fluffy cat and hasn't been able to groom everywhere on her stomach and back for the past 8/9 weeks, it could be built up loose/lost fur that she's now cleaning up that she couldn't reach before.

Hair loss is usually a symptom of skin parasites, mange, fleas, ringworm, et cetera, but if she isn't scratching/flaking/bleeding that probably isn't likely in this case.

Just make sure to clean up all the hair you find, and it would be a good idea to also give her small daily doses of a hairball remedy (just make sure you call a GOOD vet, or ask around on the forum, for one that is preggers/nursing friendly.)

Did the hair loss start before or after you deep cleaned the house to stop the sinus problems? She might also have some sort of allergy to the cleaning chemicals, and it might take a few days to work it out of her system. If you notice ANY possible poison symptoms (foaming at the mouth, etc..) please immediately get her and the kittens to a vet asap.

Another possibility if she's fluffy might be that the kittens are just being too rough with mama, and they are accidentally ripping small chunks of her fur out with their little claws when they are nursing, especially if all six of them are fighting for the same two or three nipples. They never do understand there's enough for each little mouth. :)

Oh one last thing, has there been any recent weather changes? Cold to hot, wet to dry, or anything like that? I know my girls get some extra deep fluff when the temperature drops, and as soon as the weather changes back to warm they shed like crazy for about a week.

It seems like you are doing a great job taking care of your queen and her little ones. Keep it up. Good luck finding a great vet, they can make all the difference in the world to your pet, and to you! And keep asking questions. The more you ask, the more you learn.
