Hydrogen peroxide is available just about anywhere that sells household health care items. It will always be in a brown bottle, since light will cause it to break down. Its formula is H2O2. In other words, it is water with an extra oxygen. It is a bleach, so don't get it on your clothes or carpet. It will not harm your cat, even if it ingests some.
Remember peroxide burns the skin, that's how it works. If I have something like acne or ingrown hair, I will use iodine on it, if and when it tears open, peroxide.
Also mind that repeated applications can prevent the healing process for a cut (my elementary school nurse told me that, so take with a grain of salt).
Per the picture, it looks like the same kind of abscess my brother's cat had.
Also I got an abscess myself this year behind my earlobe, I thought it was a cysts, which i get often, however an infection happened under the cyst.
Every two days i had to go back to the doctors who would remove the "plug" put in a fresh one.
Never did we apply anything like peroxide, I did use alcohol for all the adhesive stuck to me.
God, I can't get over your vets sadism.
Please try to find a site over there like www.yelp.com and take these monsters to the woodshed.
Looks like an absess to me, well at least on my visual memory from my brothers cat.
Your lucky it seemed to heal on it's own, if I remember right these infections could kill a cat.
When I had the one on my ear, I remember squeezing it thinking it was cyst, the type of pain it produced almost made me faint (didn't hurt, just a body reaction), thats when I went to my local health clinic and they sorted it out.
I guess the main question, is it still have pus coming out? Also remember pus doesnt need to come out unless the skin is torn. When I had that nasty thing behind my ear, as soon as they popped it, ALOT drained out.
I am not used to hearing such stories from vets here in America. Although, there are quite a few wacko vets here in the states. I am shocked to hear that your vets don't recommend neuter/spay until ONE year of age. That is insane to me, completely, and will only add more cats on the streets.
I can't really see much with the black hair in the way but can see some redness, a little scab and some mild swelling. I think what the vet was saying on the phone about amputating the leg was that if the infection gets to the bone then that would be a possibility. I would treat aggressively and I hope you can find a new and different vet who will help you and your cat.
Its a different vet, one goes OTT on everything as far as I can see, and the other says things are fine, let them take its natural course (this one didn't want to operate on my cats until they were 1)
His scab has fallen off now and its just pure white skin under I will try and get a new pic of this.
Good news, like I said my cats was at the knee cap, and probably from a racoon who's teeth probably went far deeper.
(this was at my parents, racoons would routinely raid our trash, this cat was aggressive and went after them).
So this one doesnt seem as bad, just be careful, an absess can recess and come back, our issue went on for a few months.
But since you used no meds, it sounds like the kitty got lucky.
As to your good vet with bad neutering policy, I would encourage him to read the memos of America's top Vet associations, and I assume the UK ones state the same thing.
I am about to open a new thread about vets views on things, I hope to get your guys inputs on this subject as each of the 3 practices have different values on things.
If you understand human and animal physiology, and research things before you come in, you are on an even playing field.
If something doesnt sound right, ask why, write it down and research it when you get home.
I have even had a few vets take notes from me.
And even in the minutia vets can have differing opinions, when Korina had her heart attack, my respected vet (at the big clinic) prescribed 1mg 2x a day Lasix (drains water from chest), she sent me to cardiologist for sonogram and specialist analysis.
The cardiologist said .5mg once a day, the vet deferred to the specialist.
The cardiologist also prescribed Plavix, my vet sounded angry in her tone of voice, but again deferred to specialist, but when I pressed her she told me it made cats sick (and it did, first time Korina threw up, some meds make cats foam at the mouth).
Always be vigilant, and use google to search this website, tip how to enter it
Yesterday my cats leg suddenly swelled up became hot. I done a little phoning around and found a new vet, who are old vets who have merged into a new building.
I took him down there and said about what has happened, and they said that we done the right thing not going down to the other vets, we done the right thing keeping it clean with anti bacterial stuff.
It popped and opened up from scar tissue, like a volcano and its now clear again from puss. After a few weeks things looked so good.
The vets what to actually have a checkup on him to see how his leg is healing - this is the first for me.
Problem though, my cat is meant to have a cone on, which is fine, but he can't eat, so I take it off so he can eat. When he lays on the floor, sofa, or my bed, my labrador, decides he wants the cone and takes pulls it off him. Any ideas how to stop him from taking it?
Gosh I remember when Porchea, had the absess I was telling you about, and I remember her wearing a cone, but it was not as long as the infection which kept coming back which is what happened to you (except it came back to us after clavamox made it look healed).
Absess is no joke, even for me a human it took a few weeks to get rid of it, and that was with draining every 2 days and 10 day antibiotics.
(behind the ear, NASTY)
Are you giving him any meds? If so which one?
What is the collar for exactly, I forget?
As to your dog taking it off, nothing you can do, however be thankfull they get along, shocking she didn't cut his nose up, collies are usually sweet dogs. Your cat, if she seems affected/stressed by the collar would prob appreciate a safe room for 20 hours a day (assuming she sleeps in there for 18 of those hours)
Also, is the collar plastic??? I had a dental vet (family friend) who pulled some of Korina's teeth and had her wear a plastic cone for 10 days, I still feel terribly guilty 7 years later.
When I told another vet what this jerk did she told me "plastic cones are only for amputations", this was when Porchea had the absess and needed the cone.
I was furious, the torture she went through with the plastic cone was attrocious, even when I told this doctor she was screaming day and night (she is bengal) he didn't care.
Its a plastic cone, yes. Should he be okay without? Also the vets said that he should have it on to make sure that he doesn't over lick the area.
He is now on Clindacyl 75mg tabs half in morning half at night.
I think I have found the vets for us, it all depends on the the checkup - Yes they offer a checkup, so thats good. I am trying to work out how much a checkup costs on their site but can't find any prices.
