nods... we eliminated all grain first. Didn't help. Not sure what her cause was...because I gave her Zyrtec and the fur grew back... her sister/littermate though.. has scabs up and down her back...then she licks them while she's bathing and won't let them alone. I'm thinking hers is food. We've done the limited ingredient by perscription duck and pea or something like that...but she would not eat. We then eliminated proteins like chicken... for 2 months... nothing. Then fish for 2 months...nothing...probably wasn't extensive enough in our trial. Zyrtec did nothing for this one... so that's why I think it's food related. We did flea treatment .. she's indoors only but nothing helped thus far. They were (well Min has passed) both on Fancy Feast Classic pate' wet, and Avoderm pea and duck dry... both don't have grains...but obviously grains isn't the problem ...boo.

Step one is getting her off the dry cat food she's been eating for the past couple years (Orijen 6-Fish) onto a single protein wet food (Kattovit Sensitive Chicken). Depending on how she does with that and whether I can find a good commercial food with low enough phosphorous for her kidneys (the Kattovit's a little high), I might start cooking food (or maybe even do raw) as a supplement to or as her complete diet. Chicken isn't technically a "novel" protein, since before the Orijen she was on a fish-chicken food, but she hasn't had chicken in a while so I figured it'd be an easier starting point.

I've tried Feliway before and didn't see a difference, but I didn't have the automatic dispenser and maybe wasn't spraying it often enough (which was maybe a couple times a week when I'd remember, and mainly focused in the area that smelled like cat when we moved into the apartment).
Have you looked at Terra Faelis cat food? The phosphorus is pretty low, good ingredients, grain free and meat flavours are single protein (haven't looked at fish ones).

I tried the Terra Faelis fish and she liked it the first two cans but won't touch it now. A lot of the flavors seem to have random vegetables in them (why tomatoes??), but maybe I'll look at them again.

I know what you mean about weird veg, but they are a small percentage of the food (veg and herbs together are under 10% of the total weight). There are other brands that have fewer 'extras' but they all seem to be much higher in phosphorus. If it wasn't for that issue I'd suggest thrive wet food - tiny ingredients list, complete food but around 0.9% phosphorus. I'm guessing that's way too high. It was just a thought (recently done a ton of research into available foods myself).

Thanks for pointing that out! I didn't realize the P was so low in their food.

I was reading the OP again. I know very little about this issue, but it occurred to me that this link might help
httt://www.dermapetwear.co.uk
I was looking at it as a post op alternative to an e collar, but it looks as though it was developed for a very similar situation to yours. Just a thought.

:anon: Sorry...had issues with link embedding

I use revolution drops which is good for worms and fleas. I stopped dry food and wet with grain and the licking and baldness stopped. I rotate proteins daily, and have not noticed any allergy like symptoms since. Grains had a lot to do with my cats licking and vomiting!

What was that old phrase.. "Finky or finicky Cats.."

-

My babies get porcelain bowls..  Found some cute ones at a local GOODWILL store..  Metal and plastic seems to bother my babies.

But porcelain bowls,.. and they are cleaned daily.  I switch out bowls...  All that licking and stuff.. I know I would like a clean plate each time I eat.. just something I do and its really helped with a lot of stuff.............

and.. I personally keep a/d critical care canned cat food on hand for any kitty that may have upset tummy...  good luck,

Hi everyone, just wanted to say I am in a similar boat and that's why I joined the forum.

I have been noticing a balding spot on the back of my cat's hind leg recently, but today I could see even more skin and took a closer look. It feels tender, but I attribute that to the baldness as his other hind leg feels like that too. I haven't noticed him licking excessively, and his tummy is not balding like some of the other cats mentioned here. He is not limping or acting differently.

I'd like to try to eliminate some of the possible reasons for this myself first, especially because my cat HATES the vet and is always very stressed after a visit even after sedation. I don't want to put him through that unless I have to. I'm going to start at what I feel is the bottom and get a new and super-clean cat litter box. Even though the litter is scooped daily, I've seen how he squats when peeing and can see how some chemical buildup on the corners (he uses these the most) could have gotten on his hind leg. Will update with results soon. Hope they are good.

Hi I have a cat that recently has been losing her fur from her lower belly & inner hind legs. I took her to the vet & he said it was normal. He gave some Rx capsules but I only tried them for a week because my cat CC does not like pills. I got scratched & bitten. I will try the switching litter & the feliway plug in. Where can I purchase this? I am a senior on a limited income & can't afford multiple vet visits but I do hate to see CC like this. Thank you.

They have felway diffusers that work well with small rooms, and they also have collars. You can find them at pet stores like petsmart or buy online at amazon. The diffusers run around $50 and the collars are around 10-15. If you go with the collar you should air it out for a couple days before putting it on the cat. I bought one and when i opened it, it smelled very strong.
